Looking for some tips on the rig I'm currently building

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 12:44 am

Ok so I'm currently searching and contemplating on a rig I want to build for PC gaming. nothing ultra retardedly high end, nothing ball dropping amazing, just a rig that can get the job done.

So here is what I have in mind so far:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147060

My main questions are: Are all of these items "compatible"? I know certain MOBOs don't allow for certain things, etc.
Will all of this fit in the case I linked?
Tips? Suggestions? Thanks. It all comes out to about 650. I'd still have to buy 64 bit OS, but that's not a concern.

Could this set up max out Oblivion on high settings?

You have pretty much the EXACT same rig I have, except for the case and GPU. If I were you I'd fork out the extra cash for the Radeon 6970. It's what I've got and with your exact same specs except the aforementioned(I have a coolermaster) case and card, and my computer can run any game out there on max settings with minimal load times and maximum graphics settings.

Even Crysis 1? max settings?
Also, is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131391 the GPU you were referring too? That seems a tad bit too expensive and a huge overkill lol. Any recommendations on anything in between what I linked in the OP and that absurdly high one I just linked?

You may want to consider an AM3+ mobo so you can upgrade to Bulldozer later on if you can't afford something like a 2500k right now.

Yes, even Crysis 2. And yes, that's the GPU I'm talking about. And yes, it's a tad on the expensive side, but only 200 more bones than the one you listed. Even if you're a teenager without a job, you could still get up that much by mowing yards or something. It's worth the added expense, I assure you.

How about that one? Is that decent middle grown? 2 gigs vid memory, 100 bones less, that's gotta be worth something right? I should be able to max crysis with that?

Yeah, I think that'd be a decent compromise. I forked out the extra cash because I could afford it at the time and wanted to have some future-proofing under my belt. Plus that 2 gigs of vram will come in handy for games which the other card doesn't have.

EDIT: But everything else you have is good, neweggs a reliable company. If you get that you'll still have one hell of a gaming rig and will be able to max out and run pretty much any game out there. You'll definitely be able to run Skyrim well on that rig, which is I assume why you're buying a new rig in the first place.

Well, I'm buying a new rig for various reasons; I don't have PC atm, I have a mac, and it's from 2008, so it's dated.

I can't run Oblivion very well on here, and while I can run a lot of high end texture packs for MW, I just don't have the ram and Vram needed to run MGE, which is what I want. I tried, and my computer shut down, like, it just died for a good hour. :|

I also want to eventually mod oblivion to make it not look like a horrible game, so that requires more ram and VRam than I have.

I also just want a PC, as I haven't had a PC in like..5 years. macs are great, but I'm tired of not being able to play video games. :(

And yeah..I want to be able to run Skyrim. :P Although I'll probably get it on the 360 first. I'm a console TES player at heart. Down the line I'll get it for the PC and mod it, but I always play them on the console first, mod free. It's how I enjoy it.

Well bro, you're definitely well on your way. Like I said, if you get all that with the slight change in GPU you'll be able to get all those things you want and more out of those specs. I'd still like for you to get some advice from some other people to see if I missed anything, but all in all everything looks fine.

EDIT: As far as mods, you'll be able to handle anything Morrowind-wise and all but the most daunting of Oblivion mods.

I greatly appreciate the responses. I need it, as I know nothing about how to put together a PC 0.o

It's nice. The one thing you'll lack, though is AES-NI instruction set since you're using an AMD CPU. It greatly increases the speed of decryption when using AES. Probably not that big of a deal for you.

On the bright side, your motherboard supports Wake-On-LAN, which, IMO, is one of the best things since ssh. If you have a smartphone you'll be able to automatically turn on your PC when you get home and with the right port forward setup, be able to turn on your PC from anywhere in the world (provided you have an Internet connection). I'm still kicking myself for not checking to make sure my build's mobo had it before I bought it, as it's a killer technology (not to mention eco-friendly).

By the time you get the parts I'm sure you'll be able to enlist the help of one of your nerdy...err, I mean technically adept friends, neighbors or relatives.

My point exactly. Plenty of time to find someone to help you in that area, or to look up and find out how to do it yourself, which really isn't SUPER hard, just takes a little time and some patience and effort. But in the end it'd be so much less money than say buying a pre-built rig from bestbuy or alienware, even if you have to pay someone to help you. Also, I'd reccomend Windows 7 64 bit as your OS. It's a LOT more user-friendly than vista, and while it may be tempting to use XP since its so stable, I'd just use the supported software.
