can you combat the shift with a caps lock?

Nope, that was one of the first things I tried, I was really surprised that it didn't work.

Thank you. I got it. It is still pretty hard to press space though.

You can always rebind it to ctrl+w or something. http://www.autohotkey.com/docs/Hotkeys.htm. So you can replace the "`" with ^w to make it ctrl+w = space.
