Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 3:36 am

A new laptop came out from Razer.
Though i guess its kind of overpriced I can see it looks good, sleek, has nice specs too.

The specs are as following:
Intel Core I7 Processor
Dual Core - 64 Bit
CPU: 2.8/GHz - Overclocked Turbo 3.5/GHz

Chipset:
Intel Mobile Express Series 6 PCH "Cougar Point" Chipset

Memory:
8GB DDR3

Display: 17'3

Graphics and Video:
Intergrated Graphics For Mobile Mode

Next Generation NVIDIA discrete GPU (GT 555M) with 2GB dedicated GDDR5 and OPTIMUS Technology DX11
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I believe it is $1500-2000?
I would prefer it over ANY Alienware laptop/desktop.

Thoughts on this next generation Razer Blade laptop?

You can check out the specs here: razerzone.com

I'm wondering would it run Skyrim well at high settings and have high FPS?

Don't waste your money on a piece of crap over-priced laptop.

$2000 will buy get you one of the highest-end machines possible, 10000x faster than that stupid laptop, complete with almost instant-access solid-state drives, terabytes of back-up storage, two of the fastest video cards running in SLI or crossfire, more than 8GB of the highest performance RAM, a motherboard with 6GB/s SATA, the latest X-Fi soundcard, a stunning case, and a full quad-core 3.8GHz+ processor, guaranteed to run any game in the next 5 years at maximum performance.

This laptop will struggle to play any next-gen title, I can guarantee you that! And when you do get it to run, it'll crash after an hour from extreme overheating. Your fingers will burn from touching the keyboard, your table will melt, the CPU will burn-out in 6 months.

Complete waste of time.

the Nvidia 555m is not "next generation."

At 1920x1080, it will probably deliver around 30 fps for most recent games or at least close to that. However, there are lots of laptops you can buy for between $1000 - 1500 with higher ranked mobile graphics cards that will deliver faster frame rates at 1920x1080.

There are several Sager/Clevo models, for example, among others. The 560m is much better than the 555m and there are quite a few laptops shipping with the 560m this year priced much lower than $2k.

[...] your table will melt [...]

I like that part. In all seriousness though OP, buy a $1200-$1500 PC and a $500-$800 dollar laptop/netbook. Will get you much much farther.

There are better laptops out there for that money. It only comes with a GT 555M? That's overpriced.

Look at several of the 17" ones here:

I'm someone that has owned a $2000 laptop before by the way. And it svcked :cake:

My fingers did burn. My table did smoke. The CPU did burn out and the plastic underneath the laptop, despite me providing it with external fans and a self-cooling surface, started melting. And the warranty guys didn't want to replace it. NIGHTMARE experience, biggest waste of my dad's cash (:)) ever.

If you know what you're getting into, go for it... but it's still a huge gamble. Otherwise, buy a desktop. One which you can own for life and upgrade without spending a fortune :)

It's got a dedicated one too, it just has both so it can use the integrated one making the battery life quite a lot longer.

Yeah, its so easy to hoist that desktop under your arm and go. :whistling: Sometimes people need a laptop that is a serviceable gamer even if its much slower than a gaming desktop. Their lifestyle might demand it for whatever reason.

Although I don't expect to run Skyrim on it my ASUS G73JH with the old i7 (not sandy bridge) cpu and 5870m card is holding up well. I've had slight issues with Deus Ex, but that got solved easily.
However, I got mine as a present and would never buy a gaming laptop myself. Currently saving some money on the side to upgrade my stationary in a few months.

Why don't you think it'll run Skyrim? That laptop is certainly faster than a 360, and not much slower than my G73SW, which runs Oblivion with a good number of mods just fine.

As for the OP, don't get a laptop with anything less than a GTX560M. And despite what some would say, with a good gaming laptop, overheating won't be a problem. My G73 stays nice and frosty. :)

Why not? the 5870m is likely to deliver decent frame rates at 1920x1080, on high settings.

I have a 5830m card in my laptop and I'm expecting at least around 30fps, with most settings on high.

Oh really? I just assumed it would require more as Deus Ex was the first game that gave me problems. Although that was because of post processing, and as far as I know that does hog a lot of power. (I might be wrong, but PP has been a pain for me before.

The 5870 actually gets better framerates than the 460 in a lot of games (going by my last visit to notebookcheck). Although I suspect the sandy bridge CPU helps the newer models surpas the older ones as a whole. :)

Nah it should be fine. Skyrim likely won't need hardware much more demanding than Fallout or Oblivion, because they are on the same generation of consoles, and optimization goes a long way. To max it out you'd need higher specs than Fallout or Oblivion maxed out, but if the info about the PC is anything to go by, they won't even be using many DX11 features (apart from optimization) so you should be fine.
