Question about steam gifting.

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 3:44 am

I was wanting to take advantage of a few deals Steam is having this weekend (Star Wars games 50% off and Mount & Blade games 75% off), but I haven't built my new PC yet (waiting on OS and HDMI from Amazon). But I was wondering If I could buy them from this computer, send them to the email that I am going to be using for my new PC, and they will be there when I build it sometimes next week? Basically can I gift to myself, from one email (the one I use on this computer) and the email I have set up, that I will use on my new one. Thanks.

why not just use the email for the new one? Once you buy a game from steam you can download it a bajillion times to a bajillion computers. No gifting necessary

I can download the games to my account on this computer and then bring up the account on my un-built computer? Is that what your saying?

Aside from specific games that have DRM limiting the number of installs, you can log into your Steam account and download games from any PC. So yeah, you can buy them on your current PC and then just log onto your Steam account on the new PC and download 'em.

Or transfer the data from your current PC to the new one since that'll probably be many times faster than downloading them again...

Yes, you will be able to access your Steam library from any computer. (just not simultaneously)

OK, because the games I want probably wouldnt even run on this current computer. So just to make sure. I make a steam account, buy the games, dot DL them (I dont need to right?), then DL them on my new computer, using the steam account I made on this computer? just want to make sure.

Or that. :P I got the impression that he was just buying them while the sale was going on, not actually downloading until he got his new PC. Either way, not a bad idea to have backups so you don't have to download your games every time!

Correct.

Yes. Once you buy a game it is linked to your Steam account forever, and you can download it whenever you like with that Steam account on any computer.

You only need one Steam account, separating your games between accounts is just going to create an unnecessary hassle.

You can download/install games on multiple computers all from the same Steam account. Me for instance, my computer is in storage at the moment, so I have Steam on my girlfriends computer and have downloaded a few of my less intensive games. Still, I've been buying games in anticipation for when I get my computer set up, at which point all I have to do is use Steam on that computer and install all my games. You can do the same.

The mods can read minds! :ahhh:

Glad that anyone who thinks about reading my mind would go insane.
