How to set a primary drive

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 8:04 pm

Sorry if this is so basic I should know, but a few web searches and I can't find out. I figure someone her would know the answer off the top of their heads.

I'm building a new computer, for Skyrim and other games. I'm using two SSD drives and a Gigabyte P67a-ud4-b3 motherboard. I have not installed the operating system yet. The motherboard has two SATA 6 GB connectors (0 and 1)

When I go to install Windows 7 it shows the smaller SSD as the primary drive, Drive 0. I think I wanted the larger SSD as the primary drive, so I switched SATA connectors. And it still shows the same smaller drive as the primary. That is, the SATA port the SSD is using does not seem to have an affect on which drive is Drive 0.

How can I make the larger drive the primary? Are the switch settings on the drive - if so I never changed them from default.

Also with Steam is it possible to configure the secondary drive as the place where Steam loads it's games? If so I probably would not mind the smaller drive as primary.

Any help would be appreciated. Again sorry if this is a blatantly obvious question.

Thanks.

Drive 0 is usually the one with Windows installed to it. Changing the drive's SATA port may not change the designation unless you reinstall Windows.

Just install the Steam client to drive you wish the installed games to go. For example my Steam client is installed to my D:/ drive (D:\Steam), so all games are loaded to: D:\Steam\steamapps\common.

Thanks for the info on Steam. That is good to know.

As far as the primary drive goes, the issues is I do not have Windows installed at all. Both drives are blank. So when I go to the Windows installation from DVD, It asks what drive to install on. And in the Windows installation screen (again from DVD) tit always shows Drive 0 as the smaller one.

But now a related question... Would there be any downside to installing Windows on Drive 1 (the secondary) instead of Drive 0 (the primary)?

Thanks again.

I haven't worked with SATA drives but on old PCI drives, there were jumper settings on the back of the drive. You set one to master and one to slave. The master was the primary drive and the slave was obviously the secondary drive.

If I'm not mistaken, you should just have to change the boot priority in your BIOS and that should solve the problem.

That doesn't explain when he switched ports why it still recognized the smaller drive as primary. That used to be controlled by jumpers on the drive....not sure now with SSDs though.
