Video Editing

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:20 am

What I'm asking is simple. Would it be possible for me to transfer the audio from one video downloaded onto my PC to another video and replace the second video's audio with that of the first video? How would I go about editing videos in such a way?

Most video editors have a way to extract audio. Do that for the video with audio you want. Then open the other video and delete/mute any audio tracks and add the new audio.

Are there any video editors that should automatically be on my PC or do I have to download something? Will it matter if they're two separate audio formats?

Truthfully it depends you might be able to do it with Virtualdub however i've never really used it as a video editing program. Mostly used it as a compression tool with the Xvid codec to achieve more manageable file sizes.

The answer to this depends on your OS, and can be one of a few or none at all by default. Different audio formats has no impact.

You probably have Windows Movie Maker installed. It's In order to do this, just open up the two videos in WMM, make sure you are on timeline view, drag the video one to the video section, expand it, mute the audio, and add the other video to the audio section.

There's an extract audio as WAV or something like that in Virtualdub

So, I added the first video and edited its audio down to mute, but now what? When I add the second video it simply, well, adds it and becomes one, longer video with the first. How do I overwrite the first's audio with the second? There is no audio section that I can see.

With the video section expanded, you should have

Video
Transition
Audio
Audio/Music
Overlay

You mute the audio in Audio, and add the second video to Audio/Music.

I'm not seeing any of this on Windows (Live) Movie Maker.

I'll try avidemux.

Ah, that'd be why. I'm not familiar with WLMM, the feature may have been removed/changed and I don't want any Windows Live crap on my PC.

With Avidemux you'll have to do a few steps:

1. Open the video you want the audio from

2. Go audio->Save and save it whatever.filetype (NOTE: YOU NEED TO KNOW THE AUDIO CODEC USED FOR THE VIDEO. for example, if it was aac audio, you need to save it as foo.ac3. If it was WAV audio, you need to save it as foo.wav)

2.5 - Convert the audio to WAV, MP3, or AC3 if not already in one of those formats.

3. Open the new video and go audio->Main track and change the source to external MP3/AC3/WAV and browse for the file.

4. Save

...Aaaand avidemux makes no sense to me. Can I download whatever WMM it is you're referring to (presumably an older one)?

Nope, If you have Windows 7 you can't use WMM. I posted instructions on how to use Avidemux for what you want to do.

What file type is it? You could probably extract the raw audio from one video and mux it into the other, you don't need an editor for that.

I've done it. Now, considering the whole thing is about 3 gbs in size, I must sit through the long and boring process of saving it and then transferring it... twice.
