Myspace? Facebook? Other?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 2:10 am

Basically I am a huge metalhead and general music fanatic. I want to accomplish 2 things: I want to be able to follow local bands in the Grand Rapids Michigan area, and I would also like to host a blog or column in which I would post about different bands, cd's, and local live shows I go to.

What is the best way to stay connected and have my column?

Well, Facebook/twitter are good for following bands. I'd recommend Tumblr or blogspot for your column. Myspace is pretty much dead.

Probably Facebook and possibly Twitter. It depends on the bands really.

For communicating in general, Facebook. I have quite a number of family on there, and until something better (inevitably) comes out, that's the one to go to. They have networks which I'm sure include music fans in your nearest metropolitan area.

Last.FM for band stuff, great for finding local concerts, and concerts of your favourite bands/genres, also good for scrobbling.

I dropped Myspace when they did some huge upgrade (or in Windows-esque fashion, "downgrade") and completely [censored] mangled the UI.

Facebook is dead and long gone. I'd go with Twitter if anything at all.

Twitter is very useful but doesn't have a comprehensive way of networking/sharing in the same fashion as Facebook -- and Facebook is nowhere even remotely close to dead, nor even declining (suggesting this I think necessitates some reliable source). I do like how Twitter is more simplified though, which is good for simple communication.

Well, I think Facebook is pretty useless.

Cool stuff.

Anyhow, OP, if you ever decide to check out Last.FM and use the scrobbler, it will take that and recommend other bands as well as, if you used your location, show any events in the area from said bands/artists, without having to manually follow each and every one on Twitter and FB. It's how I found out a KMFDM concert was nearby. :)
