I thought you couldn't install Xbox 360 games to a flash dri

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 2:43 am

I have heard many people say that you cannot install Xbox 360 games on flash drives, that you HAD to buy the Microsoft HD's for that. Well, after playing around with my Xbox here for a little bit, and my SanDisk 8GB Flash Drive, apparently you can, and here is proof of me installing Halo: Reach on my flash drive:

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8478/38929623117721495931108.jpg
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg846/scaled.php?server=846&filename=37515823117715095771108.jpg&res=medium

This is an Xbox 360 Slim with OUT a hard drive, only the internal 4 gig memory, plus this 8 gig flash drive, and it's letting me install Halo: Reach on it (6.6 GB total). So..why do people say that it's not possible?

I find this out literally as I was about to go buy an extremely expensive HD to install Skyrim, and now I figure out I could do it for 8 dollars instead of spending almost 200 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I just thought I'd let you guys know. Cheers! I think that Micro$oft would have you believe that it requires you to buy their extremely expensive HD to install games; that is apparently not true, you can buy an 8 gig flash drive for less than 10 dollars and install it extremely cheap. :D

It's always been possible. Folks that said otherwise just didn't know what they were talking about. :P I believe Microsoft recommends against installing to external storage for performance/reliability reasons though.

You still have to have the disc in the disc drive in order to play.

Oh, then what's the point?

Precisely.

Shasow, the reason people do it is because it doesn't require the disc to be constantly spinning. It increases load times and your systems overall life.

Oh, then what's the point?

So the disc isn't spinning while playing, the disc drive just reads the disc. It cuts down on loading times, etc.

Because reading from disk is slow as [censored].

Reading games from a USB flash drive really isnt that fast either. So while it is possible, its really not recommended due to speed issues.

I should point out that installing and/or running anything from a flash drive isn't a good idea. Each memory location on a flash drive has a finite amount of times it can be written to. While the numbers are high enough that you would likely never reach them if you're just transferring or backing up files, running files on the drive can cause data to be constantly written to it which will eventually cause the drive to fail.

Yeah... it's like installing a game on your flash drive and always playing it on there with the same computer. But then again, not really....

Regular HD transfer rate 1 GB/sec
Class 10 flash disc transfer rate 15MB/sec

Excuse me? Are you thinking of SSD? 9GB/sec

Not sure why you're quoting me? Lol. I was just answering a question on why people install games to their hd.

Not sure why you'd install it to a flash drive, but an external hdd should use eSata which should be just as fast as Sata, meaning there'd be very little difference between installing it on the xbox's proprietary hdd.

Hm, does the 360 not have USB 3.0 support? Would just throw on an adapter, like.

Depending on the game it can be http://www.examiner.com/video-game-news-in-atlanta/a-look-at-xbox-360-performance-with-a-usb-flash-drive as playing it from your HDD, or at the very least faster than the disc. Some games like The Orange Box show http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-storage-update-the-flash-factor-article?page=4.

Wikipedia says it just has 2.0

For a second there you made me think that MS rolled out all the stops for the 360 S

That depends more on the USB than anything me thinks. I've dealt with crappy USB that can't even do large file reads or writes at speeds greater than 5 mb/s, much less many small file reads or writes

Hah, I can't think of many devices off the top of my head that'd have an eSata port standard.

But no USB 3.0? That's a bit bad.
