Rage was held back.

This is not a Rant, or a dis towards the game in anyway. I love RAGE

Don't get me wrong, RAGE is Beautiful. But with a new Game Engine, id tech 5, it could be a lot better graphic wise, and scale wise. But with Carmack taking focus more on Console's. It really hindered the PC version emensly. Texture's, Number of Enemy's on screen, Draw distance could of all been on FAR beyond current gen. engines.

Imagine seeing 9 Mutants running towards you. Impossible with the limitations we have with Xbox 360 and PS3(almost impossible with current tech aswell, but plausable)

I wish this game was built for PC, then ported down. I hope this is the case for DOOM 4... but its not looking good atm.

Thoughts?

This has been discussed many times, but yes I do agree that it was held back. However, it wasn't just held back by consoles but by id's desire to have constant 60 fps. idtech 5 was held back (at least I hope so) also.

Well it was stated that doom 4 would run at 30 hz so there is room to ramp up the baddies on screen. If doom4 launches for next gen perhaps it will get an upgraded I'd tech 5...time will tell.

I think id desperately needed to consolize Rage. All they've ever done are variations of the same run-n-gun clickfest corridor shooters. Smooth corridors, minimal AI, minimal character animations, just run-n-gun with almost no realism. Good run-n-gun, but they really needed to break out of that rut and being uber geeks the only way they knew how was to create a console game, throw everything but the kitchen sink in, and spend six years over anolyzing it until they got something that worked. The AI is fantastic, with the exception of all the invisible walls the level design is awesome, the animations are awesome, and all that kind of stuff will be perfect in future PC games like Doom 4 and Quake. Exactly the kind of thing I've been waiting 10 years for them to perfect.

Carmack said he tried things like post processing effects and it just looked like crap. All that extreme compression just does weird things I guess and I'm just glad he took the time to see what is and isn't likely possible to add to the engine. They plan on cranking out a new game now every two years using this radically different engine and the more they have the basics down pat already the fewer mistakes they'll make.

Honestly, I think people really overestimate the average power of a gaming PC these days.

PCs are powerful much more raw processing but limited because the architecture from CPU and GPU is separated by an API(drivers) so it's inefficient compared to a more integrated architecture that are in consoles. PCs can make a huge comeback if the CPU GPU and memory architectures resemble closer to how consoles are. Intel wanted this to happen with larrabee which is a CPU GPU on the same dye but so far it hasn't lived up to expectations.

That and the way they go on and on about things makes them sound like the children they often accuse console owners to be. They really need to stop, take a good hard look at everything they post and see how childish they come across.
