Every time I click a link on the forums...

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 2:27 am

A new window is launched, and the link opens in the old one. So, I get two windows of the same link. How can I stop this behavior? It's been annoying me ever since I joined...

That sounds really weird, to be honest. Are you sure you are clicking the right thing?

Using IE9, and no, the CNTRL key isn't stuck. This is the only site I have this issue with. What happens for you guys when you click a link? A new window opens to that link?

I always open a new tab when following a link using the middle mouse button. Try it.

Just tried that. I got a new tab AND a new window. This is very strange...

This happens with me as well... and I'm using IE9. When I load the thread in Firefox, it's fine. So - MS/IE9 issue.

Is the behavior happening ONLY on these forums, as well?

Ctrl would cause it to open in a new tab, not a new window (Shift opens a new window (at least for Firefox))

Have you tried using another browser? It could be an IE9 specific issue. Other browsers include: Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, or even an older version of IE (although I don't recommend that). There might be more, but those are the only ones I can think off the top of my head.

Nope - I get it the TES Nexus forums as well... so it's pretty much an IE9 thing. I trick it by right-clicking and open in new window instead of left-clicking. I've just adapted...

I could try a new browser. I've enjoyed IE forever though. Hard for me to make the jump. I have Firefox for emergencies if IE gets cranky.

Firefox is a lot safer and faster. I strongly recommend Mozilla Firefox.

Well, Firefox is pretty good, in my opinion. On the outside, it functions similarly to IE (biggest difference I found was how it treats bookmarks/favourites). An awesome perk for Firefox is that you can customize how it looks and Mozilla hosts plenty of extensions and stuff made by people so you can customize how it works. Give it shot!

One of my roommates uses Chrome and he's happy with it, so I guess it's decent as well. Don't know anything about the others. Well aside from the fact that Apple tried shoving Safari down my throat, but that's a different issue entirely.

IE9 has many known issues with these forums and many other websites. Due to breaking compatibility with older versions of IE and having a low install base (due to not being available on XP) many websites aren't compatible and there's not been really any push from web admins to make their sites compatible.

The only thing that in your settings may be the culprit is Internet Options->Tabs Settings->When a new tab is opened, open: The new tab page. If this is set to "A Blank page" instead, it may be responsible for this behavior.

IMO, it's just an all-around good idea to ditch IE. Plugs up the active-X hole real good.

No Chrome. :nono:

Chrome will randomly stop loading pages after a bout five different sites, and after about a month of having it the browser slows down, a lot.

I recommend Firefox, has been the most convenient for me out of all the browsers.

I prefer Firefox as well for several reasons, but I actually find IE9 to be significantly faster than Firefox. That's right, I said faster. IE9 is very different than IE8.

If you don't use many Firefox-specific plug-ins I'd actually recommend Chrome.

You won't be able to enjoy all that speed if your computer is infested with viruses.

1. Huge exaggeration (if you think browser choice protects you from viruses to that extent you might want to do a full system scan right now)
2. Beside the point

I don't think it is, at least until I find a useful alternative to NoScript/NotScript that works with IE. Granted, that isn't vanilla browser, but rogue scripts and malicious ads are a very common attack vector, and AFAIK IE lacks any good method of dealing with them.

It is, though. The implication that using IE9 is going to cause your computer to become "infested by viruses" by virtue of choosing IE9 as your web browser is ridiculous. The type of browsing behavior that would lead to such an extreme situation would be less than safe using most mainstream browsers. By most accounts IE9 is at least as secure as Firefox or Chrome. Yes, NoScript is awesome, but what percentage of the Firefox installed-base uses it? Anyway, I use Firefox and I'm in no way advocating IE, but misinformation drives me nuts.

I mostly wanted to address the speed comment because IE9 actually really surprised me in that area. When I run automated client testing against our web sites and web services at work IE9 completes significantly faster than Firefox does.
