Help with building a new computer.

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 4:53 pm

Hey guys, i'm sure this sort of thread appears quite a lot, but i'd really appreciate advice form people as i'm not too clued up on PC building.

Basically (as the title clearly entails), i'm looking into buying a custom built gaming PC at some point in the near future. Now, i have an XBOX and have Skyrim on pre-order, so will be playing it a helluva lot, but having owned Morrowind on my old PC, i love the amazing mods that people create and it extended the longetivity of the game tenfold. However by the time Oblivion came out my PC was too old, and i had an XBOX. So i got Oblivion for that, played hundreds of hours on it, even without mods. A friend of mine had it on PC, and i recently played it, some of the mods were amazing, it made me quite jealous, and also realise that i was going to invest in a new computer for Skyrim (once i've saved a bit more money lol).

So, i was hoping that some people on here could give recommendations on a nice desktop build, that will be able to comfortably run Skyrim on high settings, as well as have some longetivity before having to upgrade anything! I will most likely be purchasing it just after Christmas, and budget wise, i'd say about £1200 max.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Ok, so when would be a good time? I'm not in a rush, as i will have it on XBOX, and that will provide me with hundreds of hours of gameplay anyway

I think AMD's newest generation is coming out early 2012. So maybe around then would be a good time to start researching/looking/planning. No clue when the next Geforce line comes out.

When you do come around to wanting to get a PC, the best place to go look for help would be here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1247846-the-community-tech-thread-no-109/ Peeps in there really know their stuff.

ATI doesn't exist anymore :P All AMD now.

Yeah, the people in the Tech Thread are awesome. They helped me put together my build, and with that kind of budget you'll get an insanely good PC. Mine was about $1400 (With a lot of non-necessities like fancy fan controllers and flashy lights :P)

If you're not in a rush, then no point in asking now. Ask when you're about a couple weeks from actually buying something. Aside from budget, you should also answer these question:

1.) pre-assembled PC? ...or can you build your own?
2.) what is needed other than the PC tower? Monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, Windows OS disc? All these can affect the price.

Cheers for the response guys, really appreciate it.

As I say, I've got it on pre-order for xbox anyway, so not in a rush to get it! Plus mod wise, it's gonna be a while till it gets in full flow!

I'll check that link out when I get back from work!

I don't think it is much worth waiting. Prices are ridiculously low these days. And IMO, waiting for the next GPU line is not necessarely a wise decision, since way overpriced for not that much performance gain. You could build you a very nice rig for under 1000$ (monitor aside).

Get a intel 2500k pcu ~200$
asus/gigabyte/MSI Z68 Mboard ~125-150$
8G Ram : under 50$ (dirt cheap, but get the 1.5V kit)
A good PSU (corsair TX or HX line) ~125$ (those 200$ 1000 watts psu are way overkill for a gaming rig imo)
a pretty good video card : AMD 6950/6970 for around 220-250 (depending on your display, and go SLI/Crossfire later if needed)
HDD ~50$ (rather 175 since las week)
Case ~100$
DVD/blu ray drive ~ 15-75$

You can check out for deals and get much better prices. If your are in the UK, maybe it is different though.

Anyway, my point is that you can build insane gaming rig for "not that much" money these days. And waiting for "the next gen" of hardware is always a very slippery road :P

good luck

If you can find an HDD for $50, you must have a time machine. HDD prices are skyrocketting. The same HDD I bought a while back has almost tripled in price. For that reason alone it is worth waiting IMO, as the HDD market is just a bear right now but is going to get better in a few months.
