Derren Brown

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:26 am

I dont really know whether many other countries know of Derren Brown, but he's done a couple of interesting tv programs.

Bit of info about him from wiki
Spoiler
Derren Victor Brown (born 27 February 1971) is a British illusionist, mentalist, painter, writer and sceptic
Though his performances of mind-reading and other feats of mentalism may appear to be the result of psychic or paranormal practices, he claims no such abilities and frequently denounces those who do.
Brown states at the beginning of his Trick of the Mind programmes that he achieves his results using a combination of "magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship"

This one was on last night
http://www.youtube.com/show?p=pz_Po3F-cCQ&tracker=show0

Basically, he does an experiment over a period of time to see if he can hypnotize someone into becoming an assassin and killing someone. He gives him a marksman mode that he goes into everytime he hears a certain ringtone and can trigger amnesia when the guy sees a blue and white polka dot pattern.

I had typed a long description out, but deleted it. If your interested in this sorta stuff, watch it, if not, no point wasting your time having to read a great big post :)

Pretty good watch though i thought.

My thoughts (if you've watched)
Spoiler
Personally im not sure what to think. It did mostly seem pretty convincing.
But near the end, at the theatre, They give the guy a "real gun" and tell him its loaded, but he's just to give it Derren after the show.

Perhaps when he got told to shoot Stephen, the guy was just playing along as surely you would think the gun must be fake?

He was supposed to be completely unaware that this was part of the show, but i think the gun could of been a bit of a giveaway.

Edit- They got this idea from conspicy theories, as apparently some people claim the Cia have done this to them. Such as the guy who shot US senator Kennedy. But this isnt the place for those discussions (i think?) so probably best not going there :)

Sounds similiar to Deception with Keith Barry. Haven't seen or heard about the show you're talking about, but Deception is pretty neat.

I watched that, last night. I really liked it and thought it was an impressive show of what the mind can do but part of me thinks it is set up. Either way I am open minded to it and was blown away by it.

I haven't seen this one yet, but I love his stuff usually. His book was great too - it obviously didn't tell you everything, but he did let you in on lots of little secrets and techniques.
I'll make sure to check this one out!

Yea. The part where he sits in the ice is impressive. Dont think that part was faked unless the guy has incredible resistance to pain/cold.
The rest im not sure.

When he seen/heard the signals at the restaurant, it never took him very long to react and "shoot" the target.
But at the theatre, It did seem like quite a gap between hearing/seeing the signals and the point where he actually reacted. Seemed as if he was thinking about it possibly?
*they wouldnt give me a real gun, would they? *

I do like Derren brown, just some of the stuff im never sure how real it is.
Like the time he predicted the Lottery numbers. Pretty awesome, but at the same time, no idea how. :)

So, did anyone see the 2nd episode, "the gameshow" ?
http://www.youtube.com/show?p=pz_Po3F-cCQ&tracker=show0

He had an audience, and they were watching a normal guy on a night out, who didnt know he was being filmed. Actors would do things or create situations for the unsuspecting guy, depending on what the audience voted for.
Each time, they had a choice of having good things happen to him, or bad things happen to him. Such as win prize money at a shop for being the 5000th customer, or get arrested for supposedly shoplifting in the shop.

No surprises what they went for each time. The bad choice.

Was a pretty interesting experiment.
Showed how people in a group get more and more violent, and do/want to do things that they wouldnt consider if they were alone.
They were shouting out for people to trash the guys house, smash his tv etc.

This was filmed before the British riots, but it really shows how such large groups of people, such as the rioters, manage not to care about their actions at all.

Dont think theres a lot of interest in this tbh, but

I saw both of them, The Assassin one was pretty impressive. At some points I was thinking "That's got to be faked". He did seem pretty shocked when he heard that he shot Stephen Fry. The only thing I didn't get was the audience reaction, they all just sort of gasped and sat there. No one said anything or tried to get help.
As for the other one, I thought that was awful. Obviously they were going to choose the bad choices, you tell yourself it's not real, it's in a TV studio, its not really hurting the guy. I still don't think I could have chosen those options though. And when they started going "Smash his TV!" and so on, I was a little bit shocked, I mean why would you do that? They were all a bit taken aback at the end though I have to say.

Yea, you could guess from the start that most people are gonna choose bad choices, thats just the way people are, and like you say, its in a tv studio etc.
And the fact Derren does seem to encourage them on a bit, but i think thats the point of it really, to show that once you put people in big groups, it doesnt take much for them to get violent and want to smash stuff/ steal stuff etc.

Though at the end after the "accident", one women says "why are you filming this, its not really appropriate, is it....."
Id like to see what she had been voting for and whether she was screaming "smash his telly" or thinking its "inappropriate".

Think next week he trys to get someone to admit to a murder they never committed. Not sure how or why, but will be watching anyway. The week after that, ill probably miss due to Skyrim :D

And svcks to be you, Boss :\

Hypnosis is something that's always fascinated me. It's pretty cool and scary at the same time to be honest.

Spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the second show:

Spoiler
When he picked up the baseball bat I shouted, "nooooo not the xbox!" at the TV. Man, would I be mad if someone came into my house and smashed up my tv and xbox, even if they gave me new ones after. I hope the hard drive survived being bashed about like that. I didn't enjoy the second one as much as the assassin one.

Anyone wwatch "The Game Show"? Just shows how far people are willing to go to make someone's life a misery when you are part of a "hive mind" as it were.

2nd show spoiler
Spoiler
I felt much the same about the Xbox. Hope he didnt have many savegames on it

Though, going by the look on Derrens face at that point, i dont think he was meant to smash it. They probably had only organised for the tv to be smashed, as i only seen a new Tv sitting at the end of the show .

Just watched the latest show there.
I would watch it again just to see the look on the guys face at several points.

Definitely my favourite of the 3 so far. I'll be impressed if the 4th and final one tops it.

I do wonder though, Would the guy still have felt all the guilt etc without the bell noise and the shoulder squeeze? Would he really have needed those to admit the murder ?

I saw the assassin episode the other week. Very impressive. I liked it a lot, just goes to show how easily we can be manipulated. A regular guy with no training in firearms can become a cold blooded killer, just by subliminal training.

Interesting, fascinating, and scary.

Yea, i found it quite impressive also. The other 2 shows have less hypntosim in them, but still interesting what people can do/ be made to do.
If you liked it, Id definitely try and watch The Guilt Trip, either on 4oD or youtube.
The gameshow one was not bad, but not as good as those 2.

@Blackhand

Not quite sure what i just watched, but i think its affected me in some way. Time will tell.... :gun:

I'm gonna come out of a long lurk (almost 6 months) to post in this thread...been watching Derren Brown for years, the guy is a genius! Did anyone see the live show he did, where he memorised the ENTIRE London Ordnance Survey Road map...he had people shouting their addresses out, and he was (almost) instantly telling them the page and grid-reference of their house! Crazy...

I do wonder though, Would the guy still have felt all the guilt etc without the bell noise and the shoulder squeeze? Would he really have needed those to admit the murder ?

I'm pretty sure that those two 'triggers' (the bell noise and the shoulder squeeze) are needed...just as the act of Derren touching the side of the bath in 'The Assasin' made the guy feel the true temperature of the water...I believe that Derren secretly trains the victim's subconcious to react to physical/visual/audio stimuli :)

Very interesting stuff, especially to someone who studied this at school :)
