As a native of California, I get to that website before the quake even posts, which takes maybe a minute or two.

So far a 4.7, not too shabby. :)

I'd rather have the ground move than 200 mile an hour winds wipe out my town (like hit Joplin in your neighboring state).

Insurance makes twisters not that scary
My friends crappy home got tore apart in 99
His dad wounded up getting a better house because of the insurance

I Agree, a 5.0 quake is nothing compared to a twister.

Unfortunately where I live now there's not much a quake threat but a tornado and blizzard threat, but make no mistake, I'd prefer a 4.7 to any tornado that were to hit my house.

Not too shabby means.. a 4.7 isn't a big deal. :)

Well, an aftershock just went through here in south central Ks, no more than four minutes ago.

Not pleasant, even though it was just a little shimmy. :ahhh:

USGS has it http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/usb0006klz.php. Respectable even by California standards :)

Just rolled through about 15 mins ago. WOW :ahhh:

I've lived in Oklahoma City my whole life and I'm in my 40s and I've never felt anything like that. Quite spooky.

I actually heard it coming and thought it was thunder...then the whole house started rattling.

Aftershocks might be rolling through soon.

I feel so special now. :)

That same location has been rattling all day.

It seriously freaked me out. My heart was racing like crazy after it was over. Shaking seemed to go on for quite awhile.

I love these kinds of threads. Not to make fun of those who don't live in a earthquake frequent zone, but just to hear reactions from those who've experienced their first earthquake :P.

I've experienced my first earthquake this year... without even realizing it. I just remember feeling like my chair was moving slightly, I thought I must have just been dizzy and didn't think much more of it at the time.

Lol...yeah I can understand that.

I get a sick thrill out of people who are new to our city and get all freaked out when a tornado shows up. I mean the movies and TV make you think that these things are always HUGE! Most times the actual tornado on the ground has a very small foot print.....like 10s of feet across.

I'd probably get jumpy if I saw a tornado. I sometimes watch storm chasers lol. On rare occasions, we get waterspouts in the north and I sometimes see dust bunnies pick up the leaves and form a three foot tall tornado here in California. We also have Santa Ana winds during dry season which consequently lights Cali on fire :P.

Water spouts sound cool...would love to see one of those.

Tornadoes aren't so bad it's all the other stuff that comes with them like hail and cloud to ground lightening and strong, straight winds.

But the cool thing about now vs. when I was a kid, you can actually tell how close the danger is to you. When I was a kid, the whole county went on lockdown. Now, if you're a mile away, you go outside and take pictures! This generation radar is really quite good.

Funny thing about this quake is that we haven't had any aftershocks. At least none that I have felt and none that seem to have been recorded by the USGS.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'm tempted to believe that the earth might not be done yet, that the 5.6 quake was really just a preliminary quake.

What do you guys think?

I predict that one of three things will happen:

1. You will have no more earthquakes in the near future

2. You'll have a bigger earthquake in the near future

3. You'll have a small earthquake in the near future

:P

It's impossible to say whether or not an earthquake was just a foreshock or if that was all there was.

Actually in recent years there has been some significant headway in earthquake prediction. I remember reading a while back about some method of predicting earthquakes in magnitude 5.0 or greater that will happen in the next 5 days. Not a nice window as to when it'll actually happen, but an "earhquake forecast" like the weather forecast I think would be pretty cool just as a general heads-up even though for actual emergency response it isn't very useful. "and this week there is a 75% chance of an earthquake magnitude 5.5 in the Anaheim Hills".

I would never actually say any place is safe from quakes or are earthquake free. There's generally less active ones, or quakes most people don't feel (that would be 90%+ of Cali quakes for Cali residents), but one should expect to have a few decent quakes in their lifetime even in areas not typically prone to many of them.

That being said, the upgraded magnitude gets a thumbs up for "good ride", long as it doesn't go over 6.. :P

Someone said no aftershocks but those smaller quakes just following and in the same area look like aftershocks to me.

Looks like the sequence you're getting started with a 4.7 and produced normal aftershocks until the 5.6 hit, which is out of character for these things. There will definitely be (and already have been) more aftershocks after something that size. Though most of them will be small.

Yep, there were more aftershocks. I guess their website just wasn't updating properly last night but show's quite a few additional quakes. One was even a 4.0.
