Smokin Joe's Gone

One half of the best fight I've ever seen, 10/01/75 in Manila.

That's laughable. They had three fights, the first two in Madison Square Garden and the third in Manila. Frazier won the first and lost the next two. If you saw any of them, you would know there was no set up. Ali's jaw was a wreck after the first, and Joe's entire face was swollen after the other two. You don't put out that kind of effort for a set up and you don't bother taking it the distance like these guys did.

R.I.P. Joe Frazier.

Unfortunately his sport holds no weight anymore. Boxing has long since been dead, the only thing holding the sport together is the dream of a Pacqiuo vs Mayweather megafight. If that fight every happens boxing can finally go rest in peace with it's legends.

Yea saw this on twitter when I was on my way home to Gamestop. Never been a big boxing fan and he was way before my time but he was one of the most recognizable names in sports even if he was on the bad end of a famous quote.

The fight between Liston and Ali maybe, but not the Thrilla in Manila.

They mentioned him and his battle with cancer this past Sunday on CBS 's Sunday Morning, wishing him well. They'd just finished the Andy Rooney send off. Then I saw this morning that he'd died. RIP, Smokin Joe.

No secret as far as I know. He was diagnosed with liver cancer last month.

As a huge boxing fan it's good to see so many recognizing Joe and paying their respects. He was a great fighter and I can not think of another who had more sheer will and his left hook was one of the most vicious punches in boxing history. Despite being a huge fan of Ali myself I fully abhor the way Ali treated Joe before their 3rd fight. in the last 30 years Ali was placed on a pedestal while Joe was forgotten which left him bitter and I don't blame him.

I recognize the contribution the Rocky movies gave to boxing, but to have a statue of a fictional character on those steps in Philadelphia while the cities real sports hero was ignored was an insult. They should have torn down that rocky statue a long time ago and replaced it with one of Smokin' Joe. I at least hope that in death Joe Frazier can get some of the well deserved respect he was denied in life.

R.I.P. to a great champion and a great man.

Oddly enough, only saw it mentioned here, and on the website of my local rag as he used to own a Limo company in my area, and appeared at a lot of charity events locally.

Either way he was a good man and a fearless boxer..... R.I.P.
