Gamers are like gamblers?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:36 pm

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2061983/Teenage-video-game-players-brains-like-gambling-addicts.html?ITO=1490

The article mainly takes about teenage gamers but i think this could relate much more to all age groups since we, mostly, all played games around that time in our youths.

I feel its not because I'm addicted to gaming that I don't stop, but rather I like the game, losing holds no real value in games and I am simply not annoyed by it enough to turn it off.
Like games of Team Deathmatch for example, I could be MVP overall but my team loses 3 in a row and I continue playing.
Does this mean I am the same as a gambler because I am on that losing streak even though I'm achieveing the best scores?

What is your take on this and do you think you act like a gambler when on a losing streak ?

Nope. I think that relating gaming and gambling in this day and age is ridiculous.

Edit: If anything, it should be regarded more as a sport.

Well in a multiplayer game if my team svcks, yeah I quit. It is, however, very rewarding when you are the only person who has been able to score a flag capture, the top 12 (with 16 vs 16) has only enemies in it and you are N#3 and your team still wins, thanks to you! :)

The research holds certain truth. In fact, I found myself with quite different decision making efficiency before and after getting long streak hours of gaming. Excessive activities of one thing has never work out well. Excessive works make a person rather aggitated and insane. Excessive exercise injurs your body. Same goes for excessive gaming.

The comparison seems kind of flimsy. People with large reward centers in their brain enjoy activities that can repeatedly tell them they "win" in a short period? Losing makes you try harder to win? I'm sure you could draw lines to plenty of other things with such broad factors.

I never quit the game entirely, but I have in my youth put aside games when I get to a point that I simply can't get past. I have since matured and learned that the internet is my friend in such situations.

I agree that gaming is more of a sport than a gambling event. Gambling has no true skill behind it, only luck and probability. Certain games can stimulate abstract thought and planning, and others stimulate your tolerance for complete a-holes (*cough* call of duty *cough*) I like playing my RTS games because they make me think. Sure, I have my mindless entertainment, but I would rather play something that requires strategy and planning than something based on brute speed or strength.

What good will that do? You're obviously not an athlete, in the traditional sense, if you're good at Halo. It'd be like being good at chess. You're technically good at a 'sport' but nobody would take you seriously. It'd just be a way to milk people with nothing else to do out of their money to fund insane wages for the 'athletes'. I'd like it if games remained considered a hobby.

Spoken like a truly bad poker player.

As do most hobbies and sports. Games actually have significantly less planning, thinking and strategy than most hobbies, as 1)games are usually laid out pretty simplistically, leaving little to the imagination and 2)failure is without consequence.

I'm terrible at BF3 but I enjoy it. I admit I haven't been playing it much (because I'm terrible at it) but I haven't stopped entirely.

I'd agree with this, it's more competative sport than gambling.

I didn't mean that it should be considered a sport, just that it's closer to a sport than gambling. It requires skill (depending on the game) and practice, it encourages teamwork (again, depending on the game), there are scoreboards, and there are ethics that should be followed, such as not rage-quitting.

IIRC pool, snooker, darts, bowling and shooting are also considered sports.
