DLC ideas to enjoy

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:20 pm

I was thinking that one of the main things about RPG's is the need to go back places to get to areas you couldn't get before due to not having certain equipment/level/etc. Now since RAGE doesn't follow the exact conventions of an RPG, so I tried to think of other games that have this same sort of feel. I came up with the orgiginal Platforming Metroid games.

For those who aren't familiar with the ideas of Metroid, you start off with a very basic suit, and as you progress through the game your suit becomes much more powerful; it can take greater damage, it can move normally through water and it can take harsh environments. This would be one possible add on; make a DLC pack that requires you to go somewhere to find the suit upgrade, and then to travel to a location that would otherwise kill the player without the suit upgrade. Maybe make it so that the suit upgrade also has some nice add on for battle or something (can't think of a good example).

Another thing following Metroid style would be the idea of having different weapon upgrades open different coloured doors. In RAGE, this could easily be achieved by making a certain ammo type that can break certain materials that would then allow access to a new area. Again, some unique item to be discovered, maybe a new schematic for something quite different. The new ammo type could also have interesting effects on the enemies (mind control bolts are amazing!).

The last idea I have for now is the concept of adding more things like the Races and the Mutant Bash. Both of these are always availble to playa fter certain requirements have been met, so a DLC bundle that opened up a new area that you could always go back to and play (like Mutant Bash, but with the other clans maybe) would really add to the replayability of the campaign,a nd wouldn't make you want to restart as soon as you finished the game.

My main inspiration for the ideas is that you get your massive Authority Plasma/BFG, and you can't really do too much with it as the game is nearly finished already, there is not a lot of oppurtunity to reallly enjoy the gun. So this way you could go out there, face some new areas with all your weapons and really get to thump the bad guys in the Mutant Bash styled missions.

Anyway, hope you guys found this intersting, even better, hope id have read this  and I hope that other people can add some suggestions of their won, or maybe just comment on what is already here.

While I share enthusiasm for Metroid, I'm not sure the idea of multiple ammo specific doors holds water. What I think you're hitting on is deformable terrain and while it would make me turn inside and out with joy, to see deformable terrain in RAGE, I think the engine is maxed out for the current generation of consoles; at least for that particular inclusion.

A variety of swappable armor components would be appropriate for a sense of player customization. If any gadgets were included: at least a set of boots that allows the player to land safely from any height

I never said that it was an RPG, I wsa saying that it has features of RPG's, yet it remains a shooter. Yet you could easily take advantage of the fact that it has RPG elements, like being able to move out of the main kissions and just have a wander around, like the sewers they added in.

Deformable terrain would be awesome, but not what I was thinking as I don't know that the engine supports it... It might, if so, that would be sweet, but I meant simply having somewhere you couldn't get to without certain equipment/ammo types. Like the idea of the bomb cars going through the small holes and exploding stuff from the other side. Or the lock grinders that you don't get til a couple of missions in. That is essentially the gist of it, but I'd like some that you get really late in the game so that there is incentive to continue exploring before taking out the last mission. I think that was something that people were disappointed with, so this would rectify the problem a little bit.

The armor pieces being capable of different things I think has a lot of potential, but I also like the idea of being able to utilise the ammo types in a manner that would allow for more world exploration as well as killing the bad guys. Just in terms of opening the doors and stuff like that, or maybe there could be some sort of upgrade for the Authority BFG thing that allows something that could not be previously accessed to be opened because nothing had the punch to do so. Just being able to use that final weapon more would be nice.

Bomb car crevasses would make the most sense for opening previously inaccessible spaces. Such openings are necessarily hard to spot and don't result in the player mindlessly spraying the landscape with their heavy ammo to crack new spaces to explore.

I think the game can only support limited terrain manipulation such as the Gearhead vault but thank you for reminding me this element was already present.

Rocket packs. Flying through the canyons with mid-air fights, ground to air battles, etc.

Actually, I don't know if it's realistic, but it would be a lot of fun. I'd love to try it out...
