Does anyone have any experience moving STEAM?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:43 pm

I finished my new computer. I recycled my old HDDs but installed a new WD 500Gb Blue Caviar drive. So far, I've only installed Origin (EA's DLer svcks) to the new HDD and am in the process of installing BF3 to it. But, I would like to move STEAM to this new HDD as well. I'm confused as to what needs to be done to move it. Valve's instructions are quite; confusing to say the least. I'd like to install Skyrim to this new HDD but need to move STEAM over to the new drive. If anyone has done this and knows how to do it and could explain to me how to do it I'd appreciate it.

If it comes down to just uninstalling STEAM and reinstalling it to the new HDD so be it; so long as I can move my save games and FO3/NV mods and what-not.

Just copy the folder to the new hard drive and reinstall the program to that same folder. The saved games are in a different location depending on the game though... saves for Bethesda games should be in "My Documents\My Games\".

So, do I need to uninstall it?

Just copy and paste the entire STEAM directory over to the new HDD and thats it?

If it's a new computer with a fresh copy of Windows then there's nothing to uninstall. You can just delete the folder on your old hard drive after moving it to the new one, if you want.

Its a new Mobo, Proc, Memory and one new HDD and new GPU.

I took the two old HDDs out of my old rig and put them in the new rig. So, in reality I didn't reinstall Windows I'm still using the same copy of windows.

All my games are still here but they are on the old HDDs in the same case as all the new stuff. I just want to move Steam from the old HDD to the new HDD.

In that case, only uninstall it after copying the Steam folder, or else the uninstaller will delete everything. You don't need to move your saved games anywhere, but I'd back them up just in case the uninstaller decides to delete them.

After you do that, then reinstall Steam to the folder you copied to the new hard drive.

I copied my steamapps folder to a different partition (over 100GB of games) and I haven't had any problems. All my purchases also DL to the new folder. :)

I love Steam. It is the best thing to happen to PC gaming...ever. I am not getting paid for this post.

Apparently, I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm trying to follow the instructions on Valves support site and I've got stuff everywhere.

Because I moved my Steamapps folder and nothing works.

Yeah, I copied my Steamapps folder to my new drive and when I click on Steam then click on say, Fallout: New Vegas it starts to re-download the game to the original folder. So, I dunno.

Did you re-install Steam to your new drive first?

No, I didn't.

I actually figured it out. I had to delete everything in the Steam directory except for the Steamapps and Steam Client. Then just copy those over to the new drive, then when I launched Steam it updated. I still had to reinstall New Vegas but my saved games were still available. So, thats good.

Unfortunately, I still can't play BF3. For some reason Origin says I'm playing it when I'm clearly not. Unless New Vegas is the new BF3 mod. Because I was playing NV while BF3 was supposedly launched. EA svcks. I think BF3 will be the last coaster game I buy, because it's completely useless to me.

I was just wondering the same thing. I couldn't install Skyrim because Steam defaulted to install on a partition that was only 5GB in size.

Yeah, Valve's instructions are very confusing. I had to read and then reread them over and over again until I figured it out.
