Best console for JRPGs?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:45 pm

JRPGs are my new love. I just got Final Fantasy XIII, my first JRPG, and I can't remember the last game I've enjoyed so much.

I've found nine or ten titles for the Xbox 360, which seems pretty limited. What's the best console to invest in if I want more JRPGs to play?

It's not console bias (As I own a PS3) but from what I have seen at Gamestop, PS3 is like a JRPG hub for this console generation. Which makes sense seeing as Sony is Japanese.

Probably the SNES and Playstation 2. If you're only looking at the latest generations, probably the handhelds.

Get a Nintendo DS.

Many Jrpg have been ported so far and there will be more. So far I bought FFIII, FFIV, FFVI and Chrono Trigger for my DS.

Apart from Jrpg you can also play the Zelda franchise on the DS, which is amongst the best imo.

PlayStation 2 - Between the PSone and PS2, you have a massive library (arguably from when the genre was in its prime).

This generation is a bit different for a number of reasons. Japanese games in general have been overshadowed by their Western counterparts and just aren't as popular anymore. Coupled with the fact that no one console is as dominant as the PS2 was, you have a few quality JRPGs spread across every platform imaginable rather than conveniently gathered on one system.

PlayStation 3 - While the Xbox 360 had JRPG support early on, developers now focus on the PlayStation 3. Most of what was on Xbox 360 has been ported to the PS3 aside from games Microsoft published (Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon) and a few third-party exclusives like Infinite Undiscovery, Magna Carta II and Tales of Vesperia. I can't think of a single console JRPG in the works that isn't on PS3.

Nintendo DS/PSP - Handhelds are where JRPGs call home these days, especially the experimental kind. A lot of ports between the two, a decent number of original games. The DS wins in sheer number, but PSP also has access to PSone Classics via PSN. You'll find a number of Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei games on either, Dragon Quest on the DS, Ys, Star Ocean, etc. on PSP.

Wii - Like the Xbox 360, it has a few nice exclusives. Xenoblade Chronicles*, The Last Story*, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, etc. You also have access to a number of JRPGs via Virtual Console, but you can get most of these through ports/re-releases on the systems listed above.

*Assuming you live in Europe or don't mind importing.

So yeah, I'd definitely start with a PS2 since it has such a large library and can be had super cheap.

PS3, which is why I own a 360.

Just ignore games you don't like? Silly reason to avoid a console.

Don't know about the best console, but definitely pick up Tales of Vesperia for the 360. When I got rid of my 360 I sold every game but ToV, still got it for when I get another Xbox, certainly one if the best jrpgs made imo.

I think the PS1 and PS2 have the best JRPGs.

Thanks everyone. :)

I'm not sure I'm ready to make the leap to portable.

Are these games still being developed for the PS3? I would like to have new titles to look forward to as I play older ones. (Maybe I'm overestimating the rate at which I finish games, but I dread that I-have-no-new-games-left-to-play feeling.)

Oh yes, two of my most anticipated JRPGs this console generation are currently to eventually be released exclusively for the PS3. There are no concrete release dates (at least in an English format for the second one), but here they are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiIx9VJWSl8 - I have no concrete idea when this will be out but for North America, I'd guess early 2013 or, if really lucky, very late 2012.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aAs-vZ4rZE - It was released in Japan earlier this month and will be coming to North America sometime in early 2012.

I'm not sure about European release dates.

Also, there is, of course, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMD0epdbC4A

I know there are at least a couple more coming for the PS3 this upcoming year, but I haven't been following them much and can't recall much beyond thinking one is another of those Tales games I've never played.

Dragon's Crown

If we're lucky we'll also get Tales of Xillia.

Dragon's Crown? That's not the other one I was thinking of (What was that... farming simulator*-like thing?)... I've never heard of Dragon's Crown. Thanks again, wingus. I've got to look that one up. Are all three of those PS3 exclusives?

*not sure how to describe it

Is Dragon's Crown going to be a $10-$20 PSN game? It looks intriguing, but the 2D graphical style just screams low-budget, low cost PSN game, to me.

As for Dragon's Crown, it's $30 and will be releasing on both PS3 and Vita. Don't let the price and graphics style fool you though, Vanillaware makes some top notch games. All of their past games have shared the art direction and they've been full retail titles. However, I believe Dragon's Crown is being billed as a Gauntlet-esque game designed for co-op, so I don't know what to expect in terms of story and so on.

I have it for Wii. It's pretty fun if you like the farming/dating sim/RPG mix of the Rune Factory games.

It's a lot more combat focused than the previous games in the series, and takes away most of the tedium from the daily farming. The combat is kinda like Kingdom Hearts, except with multiple weapon types and magic spells.
