Some sort of amateur programming/robotics kit? Favorite show on DVD? Book about the history of cinema or inventions? A videocamera so he can make home movies of the grandkids?

A lot of boys and aspiring engineers who eventually became real men understood that this is a place to start.

I didn't have one when I was a kid, so when I entered into my second childhood, I bought myself a couple of sets from C.1929...which is a little bit older than when I was a kid, but the older ones are better.

Gardening stuff, and if a year goes by without him asking to get his lawnmower sharpened I'd fear that something terrible had happened.

If he loves structures what about something he can build? All I can think of are Knex and Airfix models, but I'm sure there's other stuff of that nature out there. He can even do it while he watches lifetime.
