Comic Book Collecting

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:02 am

When I was younger, I never had the money or means to buy comics, but it's always been a small dream of mine.

Anyone collect comics here? And if so where do you think I should start? Guess I could always head into the local comic shop whenever I head downtown.

Also, what's everyone favorites comics? If I were to start with any comic, it'd be some old school batman.

Fantastic Four > Superman

Ugh. What a mainstream nerd. Green Lantern is where it's at.

I have the first issue of 2000AD that I found in some bonfire kindling. But that's about it.

I've got a few Batmans - Hush, War Drums and the Arkham City tie-in - although I guess they're collections rather than comics per se.

I'm not a collector by any means, but seriously get the Preacher series. It's amazing. I've also had so many recommendations for the Sandman comics it's unbelievable - but I'm perpetually skint (read: spending my money on other crap) so I can't personally recommend it.

For a free comic online check out Freakangels. I thought it was so good that after I stop spending my money on other crap (and after I've got Sandman) I'll buy the physical copies just to keep and read again.

I'm glad I only buy trades, because if I tried to collect comics, I would be broke.

Pssh, don't listen to these corporate comic fat cats! They just want you to buy into their retcons and reboots! If you want real comics, you'll go independent and pick up some Hellboy.

Spoiler
I'm kidding. But still, listen to me and get Hellboy.

The only comic books I have are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zap_Comix....featuring the work of artist R. Crumb....Issues # 1 & # 2.
I found out that the copies that I have are not first editions from 1968 but later reprints from the late '70's.
They are funny are interesting nonetheless.

What are you collecting for? Value (in which case you'd go for high-value ones you can afford and prospective newcommers you feel have the potential to be valuable in the future), collecting (not to be confused with for value. Collecting is for actual pride in ownership and usually centers on following certain series/authors/artists. Things like condition and edition matter, though. Basically pride-oriented instead of monetary-oriented), or for reading (in which case just get the ones you like)?

I did, but I've fallen behind lately. I cut down on my subscriptions at my local comic shop when I left for basic training and have had my girlfriend stop by here and there to pick them up and forward them to me but I haven't really gotten around to reading them. My favorites are The Walking Dead, Invincible, Haunt (all Kirkman creations), Green Lantern, Batman, Future Foundation and Deadpool. I have Comixology on my iPhone which is pretty cool, but I still miss going to the comic shop every week and stocking up. I don't want to go to a new comic shop because I love my local shop and its owners so for the moment I'm kind of screwed. All I know is I have a lot to catch up on when I go home for Christmas.

I stand corrected....Zap Comix # 1 was released in 1967....here is a 1st edition copy for sale on eBay:

I collect.
If you like Batman, check out Azrael. He is an interesting character.
He appeared in Batman: Sword of Azrael, which I had, but then sold it.

If you have tons of money. Get some old classics, and keep them in great condition.

Sadly, my copy of 2000AD isn't in exactly pristine condition; that said, even if it hadn't been stuffed into a bonfire and mishandled by me for 30+ years, it was printed on such cheap, rubbish paper, it's astonishing that it hasn't simply disintegrated anyway.
