Joining the ARMY? Laptop or desktop?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:10 am

Alright so my house got hit by a surge, and were getting a good chunk of money back from the insurance. Thing is I leave in a month for the military, and was wondering should I rebuild my gaming computer desktop, or just simply go with a gaming laptop to play skyrim, SWTOR, BF3 etc etc. Knowing the laptop would be more mobile, but granted when I get done with all of my training my base will be more of a set an stone sort of area so a desktop could work. but I am just having a tough time to pick between the two. my price range would be up to about 1200$ =/ so what would you all do?

Long term, I would suggest the laptop. You might be at the base for a while, but you never know when you'll be called out. Best to have a portable computer just in case.
Or, alternatively, you could have both! ;)

Don't get it until AFTER basic training, since it'll go into storage anyway, at which point it's not SOTA anymore..

They'll also be cheaper at the PX on base, so wait until you're done with the basics, have your marching orders and know where you're going before getting one.

keep it together out there

Would I be able to use my laptop during AIT? I know some do, and some can't.

Depends, where ya goin? My friends that went to Fort.Rucker for AIT essentially had little change from basic training as where I at Fort.Gordon the US Army Signal Center(Hooah) for 20+ weeks essentially had all the freedom of normal active duty soldiers in AIT. I bought my laptop at AIT at the PX and could use it whenever off duty

duno for Army... or even modern day for that matter :D

in my day as a marine recruit we weren't even allowed to see living females until the end of bootcamp...

..bar getting injured enough to warrant being a sickbay commando -and catching a UA-eyeful of naval nurse real estate contours :hubbahubba:

of course you had to bleeding before they allowed that.

1. You won't have time for any video games for a long time after you ship out to boot camp.

2. When you do have time for any video games you will have much more money than you do now, and technology would be better.

So I say forget about games for a month. Hell, start running and exercising. It'll make training easier if you already know how to run. Then when you get settled in somewhere and know how to manage your time you can buy yourself nice things.

Edit: That's nice things tax free also. As long as you buy them at whatever the Army version of the NEX is.

You can get a really good deal on a G73SW or G53SW right now, although if you want a little more bang for your buck it might be worth looking at the lower end Sager gaming laptops (low end when compared to some of the insane stuff Sager has, but just as good if not better than the Asus models).

A laptop has been nice and easy for me. I move from one tech school to another in two weeks and then after four months there I'll be heading to my first duty station (don't know where yet). Of course for that move the AF will pay to have my stuff brought in, but as for moving around until then the laptop is a convenient option.

Good luck!

Have fun in the new renovated barracks. I was there as 25B, I say we had freedom but that's more so of an exaggeration because of how some AIT courses are. Class was at 0745-1700, did PT from 0500-0600 and wake up was at 0345(which was earlier then basic). We had mail call after school which sometimes lasted past 1800 and then the rest of the night....from the end of mail call to 2100 IF they didn't add "Mandatory training" into the mix on some nights, oh and cleaning the barracks is something you will do ALL the time..

Ya know what....might as well wait until after AIT to get a laptop. Your free time won't be very much during the week. Only true free time on Gordon was being "Phase 5+" and being able to pop smoke on the weekends and leaving base.

Well I the insurance company is the one swapping it all out for me. so I was needing to get a laptop this month, then I will probably just let it sit at my parents until I can actually use it. depending on AIT I may use it, or just wait like you said until I get out of all my training and get stationed where ever I go. but for any "free" time I may have in AIT I thought it may be a little nice to have a laptop to mess around with. though people say gordon is full of rejects and to lock up your [censored] tightly =/

Ahhh, reminds me of Nuke School. ^_^

Except that lasted for a year with six months of 12 hour shift work afterwards.

No wonder I psyched out.
