Need Help Choosing a New Phone.

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:01 pm

Ok I'm getting a new phone today (I'm on Sprint), and I've been having a lot of trouble deciding which phone I want to get. I really liked the way the Windows phone operated but the only one they have is the http://www.dvd-ppt-slideshow.com/images/powerpoint-knowledge/ppt2htc-arrive-htc-arrive.jpg which is kind of clunky as far as the physical aspects of the phone go. Then there's the http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/classifications/gadgets/phones/mobile-phones/iPhone/iphone4_2up_front_side-420-90.jpg (not the 4S) that has a sleeker design and look really nice. The iOS is also more supported and you can do more things with it (from what I've seen) than the Windows phone. However I've had an iTouch since the first generation came out and I'm kind of, well bored with the iOS I guess. However I also know my way around it better.

Anyways all of you guys out there that have iPhones or Windows phones, I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me some feedback so that I can make the right decision.

Thanks! :)

Android :P. Can't really say I'd be comfortable recommending either of those operating systems.

Windows Phone 7s are really good. I've had mine for almost a year now and haven't had any troubles with it at all.

The fact is, getting the iPhone on Sprint's network is the BIGGEST mistake you can make. Sprint has abysmal 3G. If you have WiMAX coverage in your area you NEED to get a "4G" WiMAX phone. There are people reporting getting less than 50 kilobits per second on Sprint's network with the iPhone.

You can get the http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Epic-Touch-Android/dp/B005LHN47S for the same price off of Amazon for the same price and it is undeniably the best phone on Sprint right now.

Android.

Why would you pass up the Galaxy SII?

Edit.

Ninja'd, but he speaks the truth.

I'm not really a big fan of Android phones to be honest.

The Galaxy is HUGE though. It's almost like a miniature Tablet. However that was my first choice for a phone when I was looking. I'm still pretty undecided on what I want, as you can tell, so that's still a possibility. I'll probably spend a good 3 hours in there messing around on phones until I pick one :P

I'm also not really that concerned as how fast the internet is on the phone because I live in the middle of nowhere and don't even get 3G for about a 10 mile radius from my house. As long as it's faster than my Blackberry Curve that barely works then I'll be happy.

Between the two I'd take the windows phone, but I can't recommend Android enough.

The Android just seemed a bit cluttered to me. Especially on the menu screen. I found myself having to look though page after page of icons to find things. I'm not someone who does a ton of stuff on my phone. Mostly all I'll be doing is texting, calling, facebook, using GPS navigation, maybe checking the weather every now and then, and occasionally looking at something online. Apps aren't really a big thing to me but I do like a few of them that can be helpful when I don't have access to a computer. Like my guitar chord library on my iTouch.

Live Windows Tiles are absolutely amazing. You get the power of Android and the power of Windows in one device. They're both really good devices but I'd say get the Arrive. iPhones aren't fun anymore. :P

Of course there's the question of which iPhone. iPhone 4 (comes with an older iOS) or iPhone 4S (comes with the newer iOS 5, better camera ,etc.) Of course, you can download the iOS 5 onto the original iPhone 4 but it will not come with features such as Siri and the better camera quality, etc.

Despite all that the Arrive is still better even IF you get the iPhone 4S.

Using http://www.smartphoneenvy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Galaxy-S-ii-vs-iPhone-4S.png and GIMP, I calculated the Epic 4G touch to only be 112% as wide as the iPhone 4s and only 107% as tall as the iPhone 4s. That's hardly a significant increase as to deem it "huge".

Remember: screen size is measured from opposing corners, so a small increase in width and height will lead to being able to declare a large increase in screen size.

If you don't want an app on the menu screen, just take it off and then it'll only be in the app list

You can set your Android screens up however you want, don't judge them by the phones in the store. They just cram as much crap on the screens as possible to show off different apps.

If you ever want to play games, iOS or Android is the way to go, tons of games.

Yeah I know that, but it still felt just a little big to me. I'll still look at it, but I'm not going to buy it off Amazon (for reasons I don't feel like explaining) so I'd have to buy it for $199 instead of $99. But like I said, I'll still look at it.

Android or WP7

WP7 has an advantage over Android (IMO) if you're a developer since you can use native windows code in your WP7 apps (using C# and Visual Studio).

Can you guys in the States just buy a phone outright then choose to use it on whatever network you prefer? Keeping the phones actual hardware in mind, of course.

Nope. The only two networks partially-compatible are AT&T and T-Mobile, otherwise every phone only works with the carrier that sells it. Even with AT&T and T-Mobile, they aren't completely compatible as their 3G/4G networks are not compatible.

You can still buy the phone out-right, but it'll only work for one carrier... Yay...
