Nintendo’s Miyamoto Stepping Down, Working on Smaller Games

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 6:59 pm

In an exclusive interview with Wired.com on Wednesday, the 59-year-old head of Nintendo’s game design department said that he will move away from supervising the development of massive games like this year’s Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land, passing the torch to the younger designers in the company and working on projects that won’t take as long to complete.

“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” Miyamoto said. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

The first half of title is slightly misleading. He's stepping down from his current position and will be taking a more hands on approach to game development. I think it's nice that he'll be working with younger developers. Hopefully this will unearth some new talent within Nintendo as the Japanese industry is still very much reliant on the same people that pioneered console games decades ago. There's a lack of fresh faces making a name for themselves when compared to the West.

Well that's some interesting news, maybe we will see a resurgence of Japanese title here in the west. Kind of puts Nintendo in an odd spot with the WiiU coming out next year, I'm sure they will endure, they always do.

Just seen this.

The "younger devs" he will be working with, what a lucky bunch that'll be.

I thought you were going to make a arrow to the knee joke, but then I took a statement to the meme.

I don't think it'll have much of an impact on the Wii U. Miyamoto sort of stepped back during the GameCube days and while he oversaw many GCN and Wii games since, The Legend of Zelda and Mario have been handled primarily by very capable hands (such as Takashi Tezuka and Eiji Aonuma).

It was a joke.

So was my post shhhh :whisper: Maybe you should be more considerate to those of us who did develop a PC gaming addiction through arrows to the knee, which my good sir, is the majority of us. :nono:

Note to you for next time: If you're in CD, and something sounds serious, it's likely sarcasm.

Good to know the guy's still willing to take a hands-on role in his games. He's still dedicated to his craft after over 30 years.
