Happy Birthday to DOOM!

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 8:46 pm

17 years ago today, DOOM was released, and gaming was never the same. Happy Birthday, DOOM-guy.

My first memory of DOOM was watching my buddy shoot a Cacodemon with the chaingun on his fancy PC. I only had an NES at the time, so it seemed like he was playing with alien technology. For weeks, I came up with increasingly desperate excuses to go over to his house and occasionally get a chance to frag some demons.

What are your guys' first or favorite DOOM memories?

My favorite would be modem play with a buddy from work. I think I fragged him more often than any creatures...laughing like a loon.

My first memory of DOOM was watching my dad play the level tricks and traps from DOOM II.

I still remember getting my first copy of DOOM for my SNES, the red cartridge was wicked.

Happy birthday doom. :celebrate:

My favourite memory of doom was when my best friend bought DOOM 3 and told everyone how excited he was to get it, then after playing it with him at his house he took it out of the pc and gave it to me. Just like that. Greatest friend ever. And he really liked the game.

Happy birthday Doom!

I remember playing around with DEHackEd and making various changed to the game world, like making the trees in Episode 3 (Inferno) block weapons fire and be destructible, same with the tech columns from Episode 1. Also doubled the fire rate of the chaingun and renamed it minigun, turned the pistol into full auto to make it a sub-machine gun, and sped up the shotgun ever so slightly so it pumped just a tiny bit quicker. Although I would still load up the original specs and play with them too. It was whatever I was in the mood for.

Also did some more wild changes just for fun like turning the rocket launcher into a flame thrower. The flame even had a limited range and dissipated after a few feet. And, of course, I made a gatling plasma rocket cannon, again, just for fun and playing around.

Anymore I just play the original. I cannot even run most mods because I am running a 1.2 version.

My roommate and I were playing Doom II deathmatch, I was just about to enter a teleporter when he hits me in the back with the supershot gun - killing me outright - before leaping through the gibs to enter the teleporter himself. What he wasn't counting on was my corpse having sufficient momentum to follow a split second later - he was telefragged by my remains.

I doubt I'll ever have a multiplayer experience as awesome as that :D

Another memorable match involved a chaingun exclusive map I made. This sounded cool but we were too evenly matched and we basically took turns killing the other. At one point I edged in front by killing him twice in a row but it left me at 1% health. And then I pulled off a flawless kill, it was pretty cool. :)

Boom and ZDoom were lots of fun, I had a lot of fun making levels in ZDoom.

My first experience actually playing the game myself (as opposed to just watching someone else play) was playing the shareware version of Doom I on the school computers/ network. 4 players and Episode 1 Level 3 was lots of fun. Easily replaced Battle Tanks Scorched Earth of its time. :P

Happy birthday to Doom!

My first memory of Doom, of course, was from my uncle (He copied it, I think... I am not sure) But man! Doom/Doom II was amazing back then... for me, it still is.
