basically a real stupid response - the accident was caused (partly) by some yo-yo TEXTING while driving, NOT using hands free cell phone

I read a report that you're more likely to get into a car accident while talking to a passenger than talking on a hands free device. The reason? You're more likely to argue with a passenger.

That said, texting while driving is stupid. If you do it, you're stupid too. I've heard people say they're a better driver WHILE texting. That scares the [censored] outta me. :cryvaultboy:

Texting while driving's banned in New Zealand, though hands free is not. I find that even when using hands-free devices I'm still distracted because I'm focussing on talking as well as driving. When driving around urban areas, it makes sense to ban it. There are other things that require your attention. If the call is that important, pull over into a safe spot.

That said, I text while driving...

I have no problem with this  I never answer my phone while driving (with or without hands-free equipment)

Won't change much. People will still text/talk either way.

They do. Banning texting here changed nothing, you still see just as many people on their cellphones.

I lied a bit. It's not just texting, it's using any handheld device while driving that is banned in New Zealand. But yeah people still make calls/text. Banning handheld devices didn't achieve much at all, except cause a flood of photographs into newspapers of police using their phones while driving.
