Need advice on Gaming-PC for Skyrim

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:24 pm

Hi PC-Gamers,

I'm going to buy a gamer-PC specially for SKYRIM in january | february.
I would like to play on ultra settings and installed mods for high-res-textures etc.

This are the components I have chosen. Can You give me more advice how to design the PC for fast, and smooth Skyrim-experiance.

Thanks.

The CPU:
Intel Core i5-2500K, 4x 3.30GHz

The GPU:
Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 Dual Fan, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, 2x mini DisplayPort, full retail (11187-03-40R)
or a
GTX570

The board:
ASRock P67 Pro3, P67 (B3) (dual PC3-10667U DDR3)

Crucial m4 SSD 128GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s (CT128M4SSD2)

And two 4GB Ram Sticks.

I'm a total PC-Newbe, I'm ready to invest the money mainly because of Skyrim and would be totaly pissed if it runs with lags or stuttering because I have not chosen the right components.

Looks good so far, also get a good CPU heat sink and you'll be able to overclock in the future. Yet I would not update quite yet, new GPU's will be releases next month, they are probably faster and even the price of the current gen hardware will drop.

There already has been a Master thread for parts of your question, here:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1316509-unofficial-will-my-pc-run-skyrim-thread-56-w-hardware-guide/

However, an even better choice would have been the thread in the Community Forum:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1297566-the-community-tech-thread-no-110/

Thus, there is no need at all for still another duplicate of the same thread.

Dont waste too much money Skyrim performance is 70% luck.

My case

Windows7 Ultimate 64
i7 2600k
2gtx580 / SLI
P8P67EVO B3 Motherboard
16gb RAM CORSAIR
Playing at 1080p
Last nvidia beta drivers and YES i used driversweeper.

No crashes ever, played 60 hours total so far. Longest stretch 4 hours.
No missing textures ever.
Horrible stuttering
13-50 outdoors ( Average 26 -23 or less)
50-60+ indoors
It doesn't happen to me with any other game (All 50+ fps even Crysis2 dx11 + texture patch) and i have done a few benchmarks ( 3D MARK11 , 3D MARK VANTAGE and HEAVENS ) all results seem normal.
I use Kaperskypure Pure(Antivirus) and CCleaner for computer maintenance I also defrag my HDD every month.
And yes i have tried to turn them off while playing.
No difference between using 2gb/4gb skyrim.exe

NO ini tweaks

That sounds like a nice Rig build.
You've statted a SSD but make sure you get a normal SAS or SATA drive (1TB) aswell, just so you have more storage, and can use the SSD more for specific uses, rather than as your primary drive.
You didn't stat anything specific for your Ram, but I'd ensure it's quality fast ram, or it would hold back that PC if you put some generic slow stuff in there.
All this hardware is going to need a good powersupply, so I'd aim for the 600-700W range and ensure it's a good brand (reviews).
And finally I'd pick the Radeon HD 6970. 2GB of ram will do nicely in there.
