I'm an idiot, so I'm going to buy RAGE...

It's not the engine or the art. It's a crappy game.

Skyrim is inferior in both the engine and art, well actually the Skyrim art is not bad at all really. It is however a very fine game and deserves the GOTY it won.

It's the GAME stupid. (Paraphrasing Wild Bill here).

You couldn't pay me to play Skyrim. Rage is just good mindless fun and if you don't like I suggest you stick with something else like playing D&D in your mom's basemant.

It's the first non shooter game I've ever played. I have played all id's games and bought them full price on release. Skyrim is great fun and I have even rolled my first evil character. I have so far in games only played as myself in different roles so this is new for me. He, my wicked Dark Elf is hilarious.

I would leave you generally alone but you seem to insist I comment.

id makes great engines and genearlly fairly poor games. Doom 3 and Quake 4 were pretty bad really. I loved Quake 3 but it was of course for the online play. I played a lot of Q3. Quake 2 I thought was inferior to Quake and quit playing it when the grapple became popular. Rocket jumping is the proper way to get to those places. Doom 1 and 2 I play to this day and have over 1000 wads for them.

Rage is a typical id game only this time we have been exposed to so many really good games that Rage is obviously just another id tech demo. Meh.

You may enjoy mindless fun, many of us have moved on to mindful fun. Rage's poor reception may provide a clue for you but I doubt it.

You could replace the artwork for 90% of id games with something generic and nobody would ever be able to guess they were ever different franchises. You could call every game they ever made a "tech demo" and nobody would ever know the difference. Run down the corridor, shoot the monster, rinse and repeat. None of that means they don't make good games. All it means is they don't specialize in making popular games with all the latest bells and whistles that people and bean counters demand. If all you care about is how much money a game makes or how many 12 year olds love the game then don't buy another id game. The simple fact is they founded 3D gaming and have consistently put out quality products with cutting edge graphics engines or they'd already be out of business. Not necessarily the best games on the market or the most popular, but quality products that fill a niche that has earned them countless die hard fans when countless studios have declared bankruptcy.

As for most of us moving on from mindless fun, I beg to differ. Mindless fun has been around since the beginning of time and that's what Id has thrived on. A roller coaster ride is mindless fun, but I don't see people suddenly avoiding theme parks. Id has gone through a prolonged period of struggling to reinvent themselves between the gap with the original Quake 3D engine and the new id tech 5, but mindless fun is here to stay. The fact that they have survived at all and continue to produce cutting edge graphics engines speaks volumes about their staying power and we'll just have to wait and see how good Doom 4 is before declaring this old standard of the industry dead.

A roller coaster ride is mindless fun,

It depends. We used to hook down a pile of acid. I liked to snort one and eat one to get the party started but we were monsters back then.

Then we would go to rollercoaster at the Exhibtion Park in Vancouver around midnight. We would buy a roll of tickets and give the guys who ran it some dope and we would ride till we got tired of it. We would go around many times and as we knew the track well we would pull out our asylum racer, a hash pipe really, and drink tea from a thermos and just chill on the coaster.

Psychedelic fun.
