I really enjoyed the visuals of RAGE when I started out. I was constantly thinking to myself "how the hell did they have the time to do all of this?"
It wasn't until I fully experienced the game (which didn't take as long as I hoped) when it would become clear to me.
The mega-texture streaming was one of RAGE's biggest selling points, and while I was not one to jump on the hate train when AMD cards began to receive poor performance, I have to say that the resolution of the textures were inconsistent, ranging from stellar (characters, guns) to barely pushing this generation. What made it even more frustrating was the "sharp" grain effect that optically tricked you into seeing dirt or detail. The result was just really muddy looking things.
The UI in the game was also frustrating. Fallout 3 and New Vegas used an old sonar style user interface because it was dynamic; the player would look down at a device on their arm whenever they needed stats about themselves. While I do not support that design decision I can see why the UI developer ran with it and implemented it into the game.RAGE's must've had something to do with the Arc suit or something, but that was discarded quite early in the game. The inventory system was just a plain mess too. There was no organization, everything was in duotones making it very difficult for a player to initially find an item they had just newly acquired. There were other small UI mechanics that didn't make sense like the need for a character picture screen and the long wait times for creating multiple items.
The gameplay itself was what i have come to expect from id games; it was very well paced and enjoyably overwhelming at points. My only criticisms here is that ammo as well as difficulty kind of waded at times.
I know it sounds like I had a lot of bad things to say about RAGE, but I still really enjoyed it from an art director's stand point...especially given the 20$ price point. I just feel like to be a sustainable starter franchise these days you really need to push something innovative. Quake, DOOM and Wolf3d all had some sort of innovation be it, a new genre, multiplayer or modding.
