Found on RPS.

Romero was an awesome designer. The more I learn about game design the more I can appreciate his creative genius.

Idk... I find this really silly considering that Rage is pretty much like Doom, but with less enemies and health regen.

I agree though about Romero being good at what he does, or at least was, he hasn't really showed anything special for a long time (you could argue the same about id if you don't like Rage). I read somewhere, however, that he's working on some awesome project that will kick ass... though he won't say a word about it, and he's also made the same promise before and failed (also arguable though). Anywho I am dying to know what it is anwyway and I recognize the genius that he is, I don't know a designer with a more impressive record.

All that stuff is ancient history. The biggest selling games are now all cinematic releases and that's what Carmack is obviously shooting for with the id tech 5. The pixar-like animations, the megatextures, etc. all indicate its gone beyond creative design into the realm of Hollywood directors and actors. What we need is someone like George Lucas who understands both the cinematography and the technology and can merge the two effectively. Only then does it make sense to bring talent like Carmack and Romero together again to follow their lead.

Ahhh, that's why it's so lame ... it's like a Hollywood movie. Of course.

That's not a good thing as I see it. Creative design is an artform. It's just as great an art as the visuals in the game themselves.

Then again id usually evolves in technology, not game design, so perhaps there isn't much to worry about. As long as gameplay stays the same, I'll be happy to see their latest tools.

Yep, roll on Ravenwood Fair 3D running on idTech...

Seriously, people need to go look at Romero's roles on different titles and then learn what those roles actually mean.

I think Raven have done a good job with the idTech engines, I loved Wolfenstein, and Quake 4 was pretty sick. I'd be happy for them to keep going, even without Romero, but I am not aware of how much he contributed to particular games...

The underrating and the overrating are the same kind of reactions. The people who are saying "it's nothing, it's junk food for the mind" are reacting against the people who are saying "this is the greatest thing since popcorn". Both of them are wrong. It's just a movie. You watch it and you enjoy it ... it's just that people tend to take these things so seriously and get carried away when they should realise that it's just something you enjoy...

Is that in reply to "Ravenwood Fair 3D running on idTech"?

I'm quite sure he means RavenSoft, the company, which does use idTech for their games.

Yep cheers, I knew what DBM meant/who Raven are (Black Crypt Amiga) but didn't understand the relationship to Ravenwood Fair.

Ravenwood Fair is a Facebook game with animal villagers that Romero worked on, I was being a bit sarky with the original quote that Romero should join back up with Carmack to make Doom 4 not like RAGE. Hence the Ravenwood Fair 3D on idTech remark.

It was a silly quip directed at the original silly comment (the quote).
