Question for you guys with a newmodern computer

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:59 pm

I played Call of Cthulhu on my Asus Netbook and it worked totally fine until the part on the ship where you have to shoot the blue lights (the dreaded Blue Lights Bug). I have read all about it the Troubleshooting Forum, but nothing worked (the software rendering solution seems to work but then the game drops to about 2 fps and I can't aim properly)

MY QUESTION:

As I am going to build a new gaming PC soon I would like to know on what kind of hardware do you play Call of Cthulhu on. Do you have issues on modern hardware? Of course I am especially interested in whether you have the blue lights bug.

Mods: Please don't move to Troubleshooting as the people who go there tend to have problems with the game. And the purpose of this thread is to find people who don't.

Hello Burt Gummer,

I have playtested the game on a wide variety of systems that were built between 2004 and 2011, and I must say, that the game works in favour of the systems built using older hardware from the period in which it was released (2003-2006).

I used to play it on these specs:

Intel P4 3.0ghz processor
Gigabyte 8IG1000 Motherboard
1GB RAM
nVidia cards of the era (AGP 6600GT, 7800GS)

The game ran 100% flawlessly and I never encountered the bugs now seen in the game on modern systems.

Regardless of what system you choose, forum member svcklead and I are working on an unofficial update/patch to fix all the common bugs in the game (such as said blue light bug) and hopefully that should be done soon, at the moment I am playing with the games scripts in order to figure out creative ways to get users past these problems without them having to miss out on any actual gameplay.

I have built about 6 systems since my 2004 machine died and not a single one has run it as well as that dear old machine from 2004 did. Sadly it's just a matter of the game running best on the hardware available in that period.

That being said, I have noticed a lot more bugs with the vista/7 Operating Systems, and processors with multiple cores. Sometimes I've heard turning off additional cores can help but I have never tried.

If you are still having trouble and wish to enjoy the game, I can temporarily "patch" you around the blue light problem or create a savegame for you, you won't miss out on any gameplay except shooting a cannon at some guys on a reef which takes about 5 seconds to complete anyway.

So the only advice I can give to you regarding a new system is, if you're building it with the latest and greatest hardware, you'll probably encounter a few problems, although at the moment there doesn't seem to be much that I haven't been able to work out a fix around. ;)

Let me know what you think and if I can help any further. I'm always happy to provide advice and help people enjoy this game.

Thanks for the profound answer.

I've already found a savegame that starts immediately after the lights. But I have some psychological issues with using it  Essentially I would be playing another person's game. I often look at the statistics and not being able to keep track of ... let's say the headshots I did so far, is a real bummer for me.

Glad to hear that you and svcklead are working on it.
