Can I choose either character if I play it 1P only?

Does anyone know if I can select either character if I play the game 1P only? It would be really bad if we are stuck with only 1 playable character in Single Player mode. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

You can play as both characters in single player mode. Switching characters can be done at any of the save points.
