Weapons and Tools

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:30 am

Weve all seen some of the short teaser trailers and game interviews that allude to some of the types of weapons. :gun: What kinds of weapons are you hoping will be in the Rage universe? How about tools? We do know that we will be constructing engineer type weapons, but will we also be engineering to upgrade weapons or traps, that sort of thing. Feel free to speculate folks! :read:

Weapon wise I like balance. I really enjoyed the weapon set of Q3A. Each weapon could deal the same total amount of damage. The difference was size, quantity, speed, and weapon abilities. There were weapons for newbies like the rocket launcher. Middle of the road was like shot gun, grenade launcher, plasma gun. Pro was rail gun, mini gun, lightning gun. And then the hard core player figured out how to do in air rocket shots. Single shot shot gun kills.

I realize every game has it's own balance, and it's own rhythm. I don't expect Rage to have the same kind of balance as Q3A. Games like Q3A has situational weapons, weapons are frequently swapped. Team Fortress, Quake Wars, locks you into a 'role.' Counter strike takes on a RPG approach to weapons. Quake Wars also had ability upgrades. I have mixed feelings about RPG bases weapons / abilities. It can make the separation between ok players and great players more note-able. If the major skill is aim, this is a human ability. The skill carries between games. A player can play though the game, and then play again, and be a bad ass.

When the major element is weapons is RPG. A player re-plays the game , he still has to go through the my player svcks phase. I have the same mixed feelings about starting off with all weapons vs collecting weapons. Personally If i'm gong to collect weapons, I like a wide verity of weapons.

In truth I think an designer has to start with what they like, and then through play, experimentation, and testing to find what works. As well as be willing to re-do things till it works.

I'd like to see some weapons that we have never seen before. I'd rather not see a pistol, shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher. I'd rather see a capture net gun like the gat in Riddike, a dart gun, a spinning saw blade gun, an acid pellet gun, etc.
