Paul Neurath (Looking Glass Founder) talks about working wit

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 9:33 am

It's just a small tidbit from a huge interview, but I thought it was worth sharing nonetheless. Plus, if you're interested in this kind of game and haven't listened to this series of interviews, you're missing out.

The Arkane discussion starts at around 1:18:00

Interesting, thanks for this. First person role-playing Immersive sims FTW! No-one can beat the design principles of LGS other than LGS themselves (if they were still together) or Arkane. At least that is what the last 10 years have proved.

Go to 1:36:20 for the most important part.

[censored] Bejewled, I hate simple games.

There you have it, they discuss appealing to a wider audience and simplifying at the end.
just make the game hardcoe by default devs, then make a simplified mode that appeals to a wider audience, most developers should do that.
But I suppose it depends on how long it takes and how much resources to make a simplified mode....there must be a real solution to this issue, it needs to be talked over.
Im sure Arkane has already made their decision, I hope it is a good one.

There is a solution. Go make the kind of game you want to play. Then all the risk, hardship, struggle, and reward will be yours.

But saying things like "[censored] Bejewled, I hate simple games." is just childish. I'm sorry, but it really is.

He basically said that they came in to consult on Arx Fatalis 2, which was then turned into Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. He sounded pretty up on both games, and lamented that he hasn't been able to talk EA into making another Ultima Underworld.

What is your problem? am I not allowed to have an opinion? simple games make me mad because they are easiest to make yet are pretty much always successful, and they just bore me in minutes flat. Do NOT insult me.

Well that is rather childish right there in itself, you really think I can, or will go do such a thing? it would take 10 years minimum to get into the position to be able to make a game exactly to my liking, and that is only if everything goes smoothly (yeah right), and then I would just get rejected by a publisher anyway.
Keep the snide comments to yourself.

I wasn't being snide. If you are so dissatisfied with how games are being made that you constantly gripe about it and snipe at other people's tastes as being "dumb," then I think you should look into game design. The barrier of entry has never been lower. Not for the technology, not for the distribution, nothing. There's no conceivable reason it should take ten years if you keep your goals in check.

What? Have you been following me? And I never said anyone's tastes were dumb, although I do believe some are, watch this video, ALL OF IT.

I strongly recommend you download, very interesting.
I haven't listened to it all but there is too much to say in writing, sorry m8.
but the part about arkane is very short, it is basically what Resonance cascade said + Paul Neurath could not remember Arkane, as in the name of the company, which I found funny, offensive and unbelievable at the same time. Arkane are awesome, unforgettable after Arx! But so is Paul

Whoa system shock is crazy! first i get jumped by a ton of cyborgs, beat that level, then im the elevator relaxing to the music and again another ambush! spark gun overheats but luckily the mutants glitched out giving me time to switch and beat em down with the lead pipe. Is it normal to have about 35 med patches and a couple of med kits already though? the difficulty levels i chose average out to just above normal but i thought it would be a bit harder like SS2. I Suppose beating the controls is the hardest part
Awesome game! SS2 still better though, but that is understandable.
Also, no consequence for using the quantum bio-reconstructors?
