I think people should be careful not to dismiss the visual element of games. Just like the original King Kong film now looks ridiculous, it was considered groundbreaking at the time. I daresay critics argued at the time that it was unnecessary to advance any further, and focus instead on the story or characterization.
It's a false dichotomy to imply that because a game has good graphics, it must be lacking gameplay depth or a well written story.
Good visuals, gameplay and writing are in no way incompatible.

Kinda like how some of the most thought-provoking films have the least amount of special effects. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions to this...the point being that there are a lot of terrible films that use effects to make them watchable, while (IMO) a well-crafted film doesn't need 'splosions to be engrossing.
