Unless something has changed from FO3, I suspect this won't be possible without NVSE.

...at least I am assuming that the weapon repair kits use the same basic script function as the alien epoxy from MZ, which relies on functions that exist for the current weapon equipped, but that no equivalent for the current armor equipped exists.

A similar functionality could be achieved by adding the armor repair kit to the repair lists for armor, but that is less simple nor as non-invasive an approach...

I kind of looked into this. The weapon repair kits are a consumable with their own new effect "repair kit effect" (or something like that, I think). I'm not sure if that comes from a script or is built in. I do know that there isn't a version of the effect for armor.

Yep. I believe one of the devs posted before the game came out that the Weapon Repair stuff was based on the Alien Epoxy. And yep, once NVSE comes out, using GetEquippedCurrentHealth should allow people to do Armor Repair kits.

armor degredation is extremely slow in NV. ive been wearing my metal armor from the mercenary dlc and im level 11 right now. i usually get better armor but im playing at a more leisurely pace this time around and im exploring more. its still above 95% or so. when i had power armor the only time i repiared it was when i initially got it and never had to repair afterwards for the rest of the game.

Actually I think it's just that the pre-order items all have insanely high durability.

I've been wearing my light leather armor from the steam pre-order pack for hours and it is fine, but my hats keep breaking.

On the flipside, multiple characters of mine have run their light leather armor into the ground many times over.

I got into a rather unfortunate fight with 6 giant radscorps the other day. Tons of AP ammo and many many stimpaks later, I was looting their corpses... and crying over the fact that my armor had gone from fully repaired (I had literally just come from Mojave station and having it repaired up to 100%), to broken -- in just that fight. (At least I got the danged book they were guarding... but sheesh!)

Similar experience, but mine ended differently. Light leather from Caravan pack. Fully restored. Couple of fights later it was completely broken...and I forgot about it. Went to Scorpion Gulch looking for something. It didnt end well. (Apparently fighting giant radscorpions in your underwear is not the best idea in the world.)

Try:

Realistic_Repair_Lists mod

Lets you repair stuff in game with things like scrap metal, conductors, duct tape, leather belts, etc.

I actually prefer it this way, just leverage the existing system instead of making me equip a weapon and then use an item from a different menu entirely. Even if directly using scrap metal would make it too easy, the repair kits themselves could at least work like that and It'd be much simpler.

I'll be working on a port of http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13361 once NVSE gets released. I already have power armor repair kits for the unique power armors that it adds, and power armor equipped enemies will usually drop scrap armor plating that you can use to repair your armor. I could make those scraps available from some vendors, like the NCR quartermaster at McCaren and the quartermaster in Hidden Valley. As it is they only apply to power armors, but that could be changed. I like the idea of Realistic Repair Lists better for things like leather armor though.
