No Support for OpenGL 3.1

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 7:03 pm

Hey, so I went and bought BRINK today, and for some reason, whenever I try to play the game I get a message that says that my video card/driver combination doesn't support OpenGL 3.1.

My computer specs are as follows:
Windows Vista. 64 bit
Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS
4030 MB ram
Intel ® core™ 2 Duo CPU E7400 @2.80 GHZ
DirectX 11

Is it a problem with my processor? I'm only starting to figure out what the different components of my computer are, and I've been hearing that Intel processors are very bad. Are my specs not good enough to run Brink? I've been told that it should work, and other people seem to have this problem. Please help :D

So my video card can't handle it? I thought it should have been able to :(
Any advice on what video card to switch to?

..This isn't a laptop. Ey, this is really strange. I have no idea what I have. It's not a laptop, but it seems that I only have a monitor. It's a desktop without the actual computer box thingy o.o

Put BRINK on a shelf and wait until you get another computer or get yourself a screw driver and open that bad boy up :D

But seriously, even if you do manage to get it open without breaking it, the chances of you having enough room for a real video card are pretty low. You may just want to spec out a second mid range desktop for gaming (not that expensive if you build it yourself) because you wont be getting much use out of the one you have right now.

I can't exactly do that. I'm stuck with this for now, and the thing is, I should be able to handle the game. I've played Starcraft 2 and CoD on it, and it played those games fairly well.

But those games don't require OpenGL 3.1. You cant gauge a computer's performance in one game by looking at its performance in another game. They all run on different engines and some games require more from hardware even though they don't appear to be any more taxing. If the game didn't require OpenGL 3.1, I would probably agree with you, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Moral of the story: know everything about your computer and read the back of the game's box :(

Unless of course you purchased it on Steam, which doesn't list all of the requirements.

But my video cards are supposed to be up to the task... I checked all the specs, and it's supposed to be working.

Update your video driver. My guess is, even though the card itself doesn't support OpenGL 3.1 in hardware, a driver update my allow you to run OpenGL 3.1 apps...

Get the latest driver from here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

In reference to your this quote:

You're video card is pretty lacking. It is not better than the minimum requirement of a Geforce 8800GS.

Your graphic card only supports up to OpenGL 2.1 and you need the 3.1 version support. The only way for you to play Brink is to buy a new graphic card.

The funny thing about that is the minimum requirement for video cards is the Geforce 8800GS, which also does not have hardware support for OpenGL 3.1 :P Which is why I think a driver update might help add support for 3.1 (at least to a degree where it'll run.. you might not get all the fancy stuff).

Edit:
A little research revealed that the beta nvidia drivers add support for OpenGL 3.1 to 8 series cards and above..
