How can i make and customise a building so i can make a house? I want something farily small and dont mind copying an existing one if possable but i would like to add some containers and workbench etc. inside.

Making exterior of buildings is much easier than interiors. Usually you just drag-n-drop a whole building and add a door which you link to your building interior door. Of course there are pieces of buildings like wall, corner, roof etc. and that allows you to build big complex structures. Browse the geck Static / Architecture structure and see what you like. After you have added your building make sure you modify the navmesh around your building so NPCs don't get stuck and can access your building. There's a tutorial for navmeshing and I recommend doing all the video tutorial series before starting your mod. Most of the questions you haven't asked yet are answered there
