[fix] Microstutter...if you have AO on.

Post » Sat May 26, 2012 10:48 pm

Hi,

The microstutter was making me sick. I had to find what was my cause, or quit playing the game for now. It seamed worse now then it had been. couldn't think of why. But after 2 hours of trying many many things I found it for me.

Place to see it at its worst. "The Hall of Attainment" Up stairs where the Blue Light column hits the ceiling, makes this really show up. For this test stand perfectly still, Look up at the ceiling (in First person) .Looking at the ceiling, move slow and steady as you can. Sick to your stomach yet? The camera jitters and shakes.

Exit game . Turn OFF AO (ambient occlusion).

Load Game...Smile its gone!!

I tried so many things, 8-10 different settings in the INI, Change report rate on mouse (G-3) From 250 ,500 , 1000 & DPI for Mouse from 200 - 2000 . Game detect on the mouse on & off. OS implementation / Setpoint implementation. None of this changed it in the least.

I tested with Compat. for Skyrim and Oblivion. its worse with Skyrim profile. All settings, Performance , Quality , and High Quality ALL have it.

Hope this helps...:)

EDIT to add....."The Hall of Attainment" is located in the College of Winterhold.

Its a setting in Nvidia control panel. not the Game....You would have had to Turn it on ...it came with the Latest Driver from Nvidia...

Ah, okay. I have a AMD card so I guess I already have it off.

Shame, the stutter is maddening, given that it is not present in 3rd person mode, only 1st person.

I have an AMD as well and my stuttering seems to be increasing with the amount I play. I think we are just forced to wait for both game patches and driver updates.

1. The shaking in first person is the head bob effect.
2. AO is not supported by Skyrim. I have the newest drivers and the option to foce AO is not available.

It is..... in the 290 Beta driver at Nvidia.....and I have always had the option to Force AO using Nvidia Inspector for 2 years...back with 266 driver ...But for some reason the newer drivers have a serious Jitter with AO on.

I am not talking about walking...In the OP i stated Standing perfectly still just rotate head...And if thats the case then we have Skyrim Bobble heads.....

Could just be my Card or the Driver install, wonder if I should Roll back to test?...hmmmm

Then those are beta drivers, not officially released, so they are not "the latest".

I am using the actual "Latest" drivers, 285.62, and the option to force AO with Skyrim is grayed out.

I am playing with quality SSAO on (set in inspector for Oblivion, not Skyrim based on advice I have read) with my GTX 560, and I am not experiencing any micro stutters. The frame rate does drop around problem areas like the stairs of Dragonreach, but I can play the game just fine. The SSAO adds a lot to the atmosphere, and I would rather turn down draw distance or texture quality before turning that off.

By the way the beta 290 drivers are the latest, while the released 285 drivers are not. They download from within the NVIDIA control panel itself if you allow beta drives to be downloaded, and install just fine. Of course the SSAO is grayed out with the older 285 drivers. It was one of the features added with the newer beta drivers.

I get microstutter too with AO on. It's barely noticeable but it's there. It's definitely not as bad as if it were dropping frames. It's just not quite as smooth as with AO off.

The thing is, AO looks so good I can't play without it. For me the microstutter is so minute I don't even notice it anymore, but I do notice the enhanced graphics realism.

Maybe "stutter" is inaccurate. For me it's more like running and looking around via mouse aren't quite as smooth as with all default settings. There's no real stutter, only a slightly perceived reduction in smoothness. It's really only noticeable when I'm trying to notice it, if you know what I mean - kind of like being unaware of your eyes blinking until you think about it.
