Purpose of *.NAM files?

I was doing some troubleshooting for a 'crash minutes after loading' problem (found the culprit, something involving NVStripOpen or NewVegasStripOverhaul, because it works fine without them), and despite me de-tic'ing the checkbox for DeadMoney, it'd still load on a gamesave otherwise clean of it, and inform me of the level cap increase and the starter quest. However, if I remove the "DeadMoney.nam" file from the data folder, it does not autoload.

I also noted that DeadMoney now also auto-checks in the GECK when you're loading modules, much like the annoying Caravan Pack does (causing much irritation when it sneaks into a module's master list for those who don't have it). Lo and behold, now it doesn't force-load itself into the GECK load prompt either now.

Do these *.NAM files serve any other known purpose? Can they simply be tossed, or do they have some Steam authentication purpose? It still loads properly (AFAICT) if I check it in FOMM or Bash to load as any normal module.

I've tossed 'em all with no repercussions so far. I'd back 'em up though, just in case. It seems they're not tied to the HasDLC function or anything else, but they do bear *friendly names of their corresponding plugins.
