This could be an RPG

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:47 am

Just received an e-mail from Bethesda blogs, hoping to see anything new on TES5, but I noticed the screenshots of Brink. And it does looks pretty damn good. Just hoping for a second there that an Elder Scrolls could look this good. I mean, this could be an RPG. I mean, the art design would fit perfectly, as well as the storyline goes. Looks like a new universe for them to play around in. If this has been discussed, sorry, didn't bother to check. You guys probably have lots of crap threads being created I would assume.

At least swimming made sense in context.

Theoretically it doesn't seem such a bad idea. Problem is the limited area's I think.
If they work it out like fallout, it could work, on the other hand, fallout is great and a 'second' fallout is not needed.

(And I like your idea, it's refreshing to see people with creativity, instead of coming here and saying: "WTF is this game, I never heard of it")

It just hit me, Elder Scrolls games have never looked as good as Brink does. Actually, no Bethesda game has even looked truly great. Oblivion was ok'ish when it came, but had a lot of framerate issues. Fallout 3 was a little better, but that was never a great graphics game either. And now Bethesda are publishing games they haven't created themselves and something like this comes along. I mean, this and IDs Rage and Doom4, man, I sure hope Bethesda themselves gather inspiration and even staff from these people. Just seems a little ironic, Bethesda being a game company that have created some of the most memorable games of all times, now buy up and publish games that look better than their own. They really need to pick up the pace themselves.

Anyway, yeah, it would have made a nice backdrop for an RPG :) I hope we get some editor tools or something for Brink. Perhaps the community could have made a story driven RPGish kind of mod.

Edit: It would have to compete with fallout really. I mean, this game is pretty different. Only similarities are the deserted feeling kind of thing. But this game has no mutants as far as I know ^^ And the smooth system would have been great in an RPG as well. Imagine, a game as fast paced and Brink, combined with an Elder Scrolls kind of story and quest structure.

The Problem I see for an RPG in the BRINK-Universe, is the actual setting. Because as an RPG, there would probably be no "good" ending. Both as Resistance and Security you had to kill thousands of people to make the ARK work.

Who says it would need a "good" ending? The object of a story is to tell a story not make sure they absolutely always end with a happy feel good ending. Despite that, I'd much rather see an rpg set in the Brink world as opposed to seeing someone try to turn it into an rpg. Because it would just be too strange, much the same way those user made Starcraft "rpg" maps are fairly meh. Really though it would depend quite a bit on just how big ARK is supposed to be... because we're at least supposed to assume that there's not much dry land (insert Waterworld joke here) left by way of the previews mentioning how ARK has lost contact with the outside world. So, apart from boats or some form of flying machine you'd be pretty much restricted to the city. Despite that I think the SMART system in conjunction with the parkour elements that will probably go hand in hand with it... that might not be such an issue. There would be potential for enough separate routes that any back tracking you had to do wouldn't be entirely tedious. Although I'd very much be in favour of routes that don't actually go anywhere. It is a city after all, that particular facet wasn't designed with commuting in mind. :P

An RPG does sound good. I love fallout 3 so much i got all the DLC on xbox, then i got a free xbox 360 fallout wallpaper! Brink seems to have limit of terrain because of the ark and all so an RPG wouldn't be too good
(that's if you love free roam like oblivion or fallout 3)...however if they made another game with the same graphics or better, sure!

The limit of terrain given by the ARK really shouldn't be a problem, if it's done well. After all, you could spend days in the city of Athkatla in Baldur's Gate 2 without getting bored at all.

If they gave it a 3rd person view similar to how Oblivion and Fallout did it, or an 3rd person over the shoulder view (or at least give an option for it) with the smart system I'd totally play it.

If they did an RPG, its have to be similar to Tom Clancy's Endwar, even though that wasnt really an RPG, the 2 forces in Brink would have to take the key locations, and obviously Brink could make expansions into new places.
