The Music of Brink

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:35 pm

OK, i went a bit over-the-top here. Sorry. Couldn't resist. I know a topic has already been made, but i forget where it was so i couldn't bump it. And i put in a few extra options. Maybe too many.

I'm gonna go with Alternative Rock and Metal. I think 30 Seconds to Mars' entire album This Is War and Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime are perfect for BRINK. They fit the story, and are awesome. Imagine 30STM's songs Escape, Stranger in a Strange Land and Vox Populi as opening songs and cutscenes, and Night of the Hunter, This is War and Search and Destroy playing during missions. Although a lot of metal songs work with it 2. I feel Prog Rock also has an arguable place in BRINK.

A lot of my ones up here are ridiculous. Ignore most of it.

I still miss a dnb option. :D

I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever audio the devs decide to put in. Personally though, I think dubstep and techno would work well, since they often don't rely on lyrics. Just some nice heavy beats to get people in a war-waging mood. I like rock too, but without the words they might lose some effect. This isn't always the case, as evidenced by Breaking Benjamin's Blow Me Away being in Halo 2. But it just doesn't work for every song, whether that song is good on its own or not. That said, I do think This is War fits quite well with Brink.

For the entire game, one music genre cannot describe every ethnicity theme. So, a combo of all of the above.

Dubstep would be phat, not a DnB fan though. Although I'm an xbox player so I'll get whatever music I want.

Well, Halo managed to pull off classical music quite nicely, but i think for a game like brink, i would like something colorful like techno-rock to go along with the art style

This, very much.

Music is definately a big factor in games. The best interaction of Soundtrack and Game was in Flatout 2, if you ask me. But it really shouldn't be one genre only. Get a nice mix of different music styles, some rock, some pop, some dub, some dnb, some techno.

I LOVE your first 2 songs, but I think the island pt 1 would be one of the better dnb songs for Brink. ^^

That is Part 1 "Dawn"?

Personally I like "Witchcraft" alot more, but I think "The Island" suits BRINK better.

Ow, now I see what I typed. Instead of 'but' it should have been 'and'.

Combination of the above... Depending on the situation, location and something else that ends with -ation you could use any number of music genres. But I think for the most part it would play nicer with ambient sound effects and music coming from things like radios, tv screens and what have you. It's my sound set up for Fallout 3 and it makes the whole experience feel a little more in-depth for me. >.>

Going the Fallout way and use music which is really connected to the universe is hard in BRINK, though. I mean, that game is set 2045, what kind of music will we listen to then? And thought further, the ARK is isolated, so what kind of music would the people listen to there in particular? Some peaceful ambient tootling, to keep the crowd dovish?

True enough, though if the last while has been any indicator a few new styles will pop up, but in general people will keep listening to absolutely everything. The concept of battles being backed by what we'll just call 'elevator music' does spring to mind, and it's quite appealing.

You must be the first person to find "elevator music" appealing. :P

Only because it would be so off. Much like the Jazz and Swing from Fallout 3. You have this happy and upbeat music for a scenario that is really anything but. :P

Well, due to the fact that the arc is a very diverse melting pot, I would expect a lot of mixing of genres and cultures, possibly resulting in some really odd but interesting combination. I think it would evolve similar to pidgin languages in places like Hawaii, where you have a mix of so many cultures and languages that the mixed result becomes something new entirely.

Although, it would be hard to actually create a sound like that for a story, and even harder to put it into context for the player.

Sheep of Jesus-- err, I mean Lamb of God.

Bu seriously, dramatic classical music (violins and stuff) would be good.

I'd think I'd go for a bit of electric dance with a bit of trip hop mixed in, sort of upbeat massive attack.

I think Them And Us by Bad Religion would be an awesome theme, it even makes sense to the story and the no one's the good guy, no one's the bad guy thing, It fits perfectly.

That or anything else off of Cult. ;p

I wouldn't start applying contextual songs, otherwise you have an entire album of the exact same song umpteen times. -.-; Electronic, was much as I like it (Pretty much everything that isn't Breakcore) it's kind of become a trope for music from the future. For some reason we figure that as technology advances music will just sort of ascend into electronica only... despite the fact that traditional instruments have been around for pretty much ever, and they're still here despite being a few Epochs old. -.-;

If anything I'd like to see them invent an instrument or genre and stick that into the game. :P
