Exactly whowhat are the Thalmor? : V - Skyrim

I love the fourth era setting because of the addition of the Thalmore as well, now there is a genuine bad guy faction, and it gives me hope that we will see a Summerset Isle game eventually, since that's now a highly interesting region.

I also thought the fact that Psijics are still kicking around and at odds with the Thalmore was a nice touch.

Honestly though, anyone who joined the Stormcloaks because they hate the Thalmore fell for the Thalmore's ploy beautifully.

But I still have questions:

-Who/what are the Thalmor? It seems to me from the information that they're either just Altmer, or an Altmer-Bosmer hybrid?
-What are they and why did they suddenly get the power to take half the Empire? Even in a weakened state I can't imagine a single province or two being able to take over so much land and sack the Imperial City.
-Where are they from?
-Why did they want to outlaw Talos worship so much?

1. It's the government of the Summerset Isles, Valenwood, and their client states Anequina & Pelletine which you might no better as Elsweyr.
2. They are Altmer, Bosmer, and Khajiit
3. Summerset Isles, Valenwood Elsweyr
4. Because they don't believe he is a god and think it's heretical to worship him as such.

Has anyone noticed that all the Thalmor forces are Altmer, whereas the servants are all Bosmer? I guess some elves are more Equal than others...
