[REQ] Nordic Ringmail!

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 9:43 am

I feel kind of dirty making a request; I generally think if you want something done it's best to do it yourself (I did have a go, the results were awful). So instead of this being a true request, think of this as inspiration.

Like many, I played the hell out of Morrowind (and still do), and my go-to warrior armour was the Nordic ringmail cuirass; it was simple and attractive, very appealing. So Imagine my horror when Skyrim launched and there was no Nordic ringmail anything to be found! That is, aside from a very paltry undervest for some of the guard uniforms, hardly befitting of a strong and independent Dovahkiin such as myself.

So, while a straight copy of the Morrowind version would be great, why not bring it a bit up to 2012 standards, extra bits!

This picture here - http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/12/chest_900.jpg - is very much like I'd imagine the chest should look like (perhaps with a coiled dragon instead of knotwork on the buckle? And maybe sleeveless?). Then, for the lower half (this was the best image I could find) - http://www.wargamesfactory.com/Images/Viking_1stPaint.jpg - some trousers like that, with a little bit of tunic poking out.

Like I said at first; I feel kind of dirty for doing this, but there is definitely a lack of armour variety in Skyrim, which is especially odd when Morrowind had so many. So, don't think of this as begging, just food for thought.

Thanks for reading.

Edit: Actually, I think I'd be able to do the texturing work, I'd certainly like to have a go. I would still need someone else to do the mesh work (yes, the harder job).

Edit 2: This is from Adam Adamowicz's concept art, and I think it was his idea of what Skyrim's ringmail armour should look like- http://www.flickr.com/photos/47857688@N08/6877542293/in/set-72157629321466509. Looks very fancy indeed.

One and only bump for visibility and because I made a few edits.

I like this idea enough to potentially work on it, but my hands are really filled to the brim right now. When I finish some other stuff, I might tackle this.

If someone wants to tackle this before me, you can go right ahead. I wont mind

I wanted to add a lot of Adam Adamowicz's concept stuff into the game anyway, as it all should have been in the game in the first place. Why make an artist draw so much concept art and only use 5% of it? =/

But anyway, right now I can't make any promises, but do know that there's hope for it yet!

Edit: The Mesh work is not that difficult, because there are existing things in the game that already match up with this to some degree.

This for example: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/504638771992706405/66185077465A703648E415506DF9A2BC3756F56F/

Would be a great starter mesh. And placing the Bandit leather cross strap over it would give you the initial image you submitted.

Just gotta get creative.

But I think making a believable texture with proper normal mapping is the more difficult bit. But that's just me.

The Adamowicz stuff is all just so fantastic, the only reason I can see that more of his stuff didn't make it in would have been time constraints, which is a huge shame (there's a 'Nord mail' armour in there too that looks amazing).

As for the mesh work, exactly what you said was what I thought would be the best start, just trim the lower half a bit, make new one and it's there. The studded armour strap would also be ideal. For the texture, I was really just saying that so I could at least offer some kind of assistance, if my texturing went poorly I could at least do the CK -adding to levelled lists and merchants- bit.

Don't feel harried either, time is the one thing there's always enough of... except when there isn't -damn you dissertations!

Well if you are interested, you can start working on the texture now. It will be good practice. You might enjoy it too. Just look around for chainmail texture tutorials online.

As a side note, because of how Bethesda meshes work now, you have to have both a shirt and a pants at the same time for the torso. So you'd have make sure your plans include both a shirt and pants option.
