Enourmous framerate drop.

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 3:34 am

Update: As of http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1301488-enourmous-framerate-drop/page__view__findpost__p__19592706 I think it might be fixed, but I'm not in the mood for playing Skyrim right now due to massive headache so I'll check it out more later.

Okay, so yesterday at 6AM to 9AM I was able to play Skyrim like always, with very little framerate problem at all.
I mean, in towns I get a bit worse framerate but it's not something I mind too much, it isn't in the way or anything.

During the last 24 hours I've been on these forums, watched some youtube videos, watched a dvd of The Thing, read some on Wikipedia and googled for a online chess game for a forum post.
Under these 24 hours something must have happened, cause now the framerate is like...

Okay, let's put it like this, on the highest settings when I visited Markarth the framerate drop was quite ridiculous while in dungeons on my current settings (Sort of medium settings) there is no framerate problem at all.
But now, I loaded a dungeon save and the framerate drop was as bad as Markarth was on the highest settings times two.

I heard that 1.2 was released yesterday, could it have been the problem for my framerate drop?
Or is there something with my computer? Like the graphics card? Or a virus?

I didn't have time to check stuff out as I had to catch the bus but I'm gonna do a virus scan later and a disc clean up(rough translation).

And before anyone asks, no I do not know any specs, I have no idea what processor I have, I have no idea what graphics card I have.
"So how are we suppose to help you?"
I just want a general idea of what could be wrong, a hypothetical situation of what could cause this framerate drop.
Like if you know that X causes framerate drops then feel free to mention it and what could solve that hypothetical situation.

First things first, did the patch cause framerate drops for anyone else?

Spoiler

I know I know, I should know these things but I don't. And last time I asked something on the New Vegas Bug Forums I got a very aggressive response.
So please don't come with any smug replies of superiority. I'm like a stereotypical blond bimbo when it comes to computers and that isn't likely to change.
If you want to be able to pinpoint the problem then I'm not going to be able to help you help me.
Again, just give me the general ideas of what could cause these problems, hypothetical situations of what causes framerate drops, and what can be done in those hypothetical situations to fix them.

Like I said, I'm not smart with computers at all.
But a game should not drop from almost perfect framerate to like a frame per second over night.
Especially since I haven't done anything to strain anything on the computer.

Poor hardware/too high settings.
hypothetical situations of what causes framerate drops
When the game asks too much of your hardware.
and what can be done in those hypothetical situations to fix them.
Either get better hardware or reduce what the game is asking of it by lowering settings.

I doubt it's poor hardware, it's a new computer which has been fine all the time until this morning.
As for my settings, when I was in the wilderness in Skyrim with the highest settings the framerate wasn't good but it wasn't "that" bad either, it was... Okay, somewhat choppy but playable.
Since then I lowered to Medium settings, so I doubt the settings are too high considering it's run fine on the current settings since release date.

[edit]

And yeah yeah I know that "just cause it's a new computer doesn't mean it's specs are great".
Still, it is a new computer that hasn't had any problems with games previously (apart from Fallout 1 and 2 but that was because of the newest Windows not being keen on those games).

Well you can rule out hardware by following TehJumpingJawa's instructions.

If it's not hardware then try verifying the steam cache. Follow the steps here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1284821-trouble-launching-the-game-post-patch/

I got a big fps drop with 1.2.
I have since found that the launcher now sets high shadows for my setup, whereas previously it was setting medium, reverting that has pretty much fixed it.
So I'd check your shadow settings.

I think I am also still seeing worse hitching (pausing/fps lag blips) than last patch, but uncertain on that.

If it's not hardware then try verifying the steam cache. Follow the steps here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1284821-trouble-launching-the-game-post-patch/
Trying this now too.

[edit]

I think that did the trick.
I started up the game along with a boosting program like I always do, the startup wanted to see what settings would be best for me, set it to High quality and then when I started the game that huge framerate drop has seemingly disappeared.

I thought my video/graphic card had been fried or something.

But yeah I think this worked, I'm not in the mood for playing Skyrim right away though so I'll see if it's fully fixed later on.

Ok you have a weakish CPU, so if the shadows increased as epikal cleverly spotted then your framerate will plummit. Being a laptop you also have to worry about the CPU throttling back either for power or heat reasons.

Verifying steam cache should reset your ini, so return shadows to the right settings - if not go to the options screen from the launcher and turn shadows down and AA off. This will also help heating, but make sure you play on a hard surface with good ventilation around the laptop, and with the power cord connected.

edit - crossposted. Cool, hope it is properly sorted for you now :)

Hi,

It's not just you who gets FPS inconsitancies.

I was playing last night (usually around 60 fps) entered this one area and my FPS was showing below 30. It'd shown the odd bit of stutter every now and again but I'd never seen my FPS drop like that. FPS had been great, then in tanked in this particular area. The area wasn't anything special, no distant vistas, no NPC's wandering around - just a normal wilderness location.

Thing is, I'm still on the day-one patch v1.1 so it's not patch related for me, just another glitch.

As I said, generally things are fine for me - even in the known low-fps areas people mention - that's why I thought this was odd.

Oh well, hopefully these little niggles will be address at some point. Game is still playable, but that one situation last night was the closest I'd come to it not being.

Btw: before someone says "hardware issue / rubbish PC etc." they can be valid points, however general good performance with glitches at random points suggests game issue. Neither GPUs or CPU were heavily loaded at all when the FPS drop occurred, suggesting the system wasn't stressed - nor was the HDD light flashing from disk access so it's not that.

Cheers,

Scoob.

There are certain areas where I dip down into what looks like the teens FPS. I run at a smooth 60fps almost constantly. There are just certain places that cause huge dips in FPS. I'll be in a cave looking one way down a corridor and its fine, if I turn around, it becomes a slideshow. So, its definitely some unoptimized area of the cave. Lighting + fog, smoke, etc.

I had a drop of about 10-15 FPS everywhere after patch 1.2 was applied. There's a thread with about 450 bugs somewhere around here, then they release such a patch, well... what can I add??

edit - crossposted. Cool, hope it is properly sorted for you now :)
Yeah it's back to normal now, tried playing it some and the framerate is like it used to be, fine in the wild and dungeons and a bit bad in Markarth, Whiterun and Riften.

Got the same problem. Had 50-60 on ultra settings 'till now. Then yesterday I could a lot of times barely pass the 20 fps mark.

Thanks, this sort of did the trick. Until now, I had my graphics on Ultra and it worked fine. I reduced shadows to "high" and now it's as smooth as a Altmer's buttcheeks (I'm guessing they're smooth, had no first-hand experience thus far).

Well, I'm back with this issue again, this time it's for L4D2 as well.
I tried right clicking on the games, selecting properties then verifying game cache and they both still have huge framerate drops.
I searched for viruses and removed what few petty ones I had.
Is there anything else I can do?

Back again, eh. What anti-virus do you have?
Norton 360.
Dunno if it's a virus really, it seems like the same thing happened again like last time only that now verifying the cache doesn't fix anything.

  • I've done a virus scan.
  • Verified steam cache on both games.
  • Removed tons of other crap I had on the computer (Avi and Mp3 files that took up a lot of space.)
  • I also did a "diskrensing", the rough translation is uhm... Well if you right click on C:/ and select Properties then there is a button right next to the circle that displays taken and open space left on the drive.
  • I removed the custom campaigns I got from l4dmaps.com from my L4D directory.
The only thing out of the ordinary I think I've done since yesterday is that I started up Neverwinter Nights 2: Platinum Edition, it couldn't load, so I ended up changing the screen resolution (on that game) and set texture to Medium and it finally loaded but it's framerate was like on L4D2 and Skyrim right now.
So I went back in there and dropped the Shadows down to nothing and it's framerate became a lot better.
Gonna try to boot up NWN2:PE.

[edit]

Started up NWN2:PE, worked kinda fine, had a tiny hack every 5 seconds if I roated the camera around my character.
Started up L4D2, turned down Shader settings to Low, no improvement.

[edit]

Anyway, so last night I played I Hate Mountains in L4D2, a custom campaign, one of the larger ones.
The framerate was perfect.
Not a single hack what so ever.
Since then I've been on the forums, checked out L4Dmaps, checked out DeviantArt and facebook and NMA and the usual stuff.
The only things that could be considered abnormal for my PC would be that I downloaded like 8 custom campaigns from L4Dmaps and installed them.
But I removed those campaigns later on and they shouldn't affect Skyrim.
And the other thing is that I tried out NWN2 for about 10 minutes.

That's all I've done.
Forums, news, DeviantArt, downloaded some campaigns, tweaked NWN2's settings and watched a bunch of Rescue Me.
No idea why this happened last time nor this time.

[edit]

Just talked to two friends on Steam, they both said that they had experienced framerate issues on rare occasions but that they wen't away by themselves after a couple of hours.
Could anyone here further validate this?

Well Skyrim does lag a lot in certain areas such as Markarth and Whiterun, so that could be your problem.

That said, I asked about your antivirus since this problem seems to be occuring in multiple games, but only at certain times. Make sure you don't have Norton 360 scheduled to scan your computer at inconvenient times. Norton can slow down computers quite a bit when it is scanning and since your cpu is only 1.8 ghz, this would be very noticeable. Skyrim's minimum requirement is 2.0 ghz, so the only reason you can run it at all is that you have a 4-core processor and a decent video card.

Edit: It's been a while since I used Norton360, but I believe it also has an option to scan files when they are opened. Turning this off will give your system a significant boost. Also, the fact that you found any viruses at all is a bad sign, as there could be more that Norton hasn't caught. I woould suggest downloading the Malwarebytes trial and scanning your computer with that to make sure your system is clean: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

1. So apart from the Norton thing I'm lucky I can play Skyrim? Heh, even more reason for me to save up for a stationary computer later on.
2. Gonna try using the Malwarebytes thing and try to find out if I can stop Norton from auto-scanning crap when I'm playing stuff.
3. Nope, swedish and I have problems even understanding my own language so despite danish, norwegian and swedish being close to each other I have hard time understanding the other two.

[edit]

2. I did a fast search and it came up with nothing, it's 2am now though so I don't have time to do a full search, gonna wait with it until tomorrow.

Well, it seems like my friends on Steam were right.
That games on Steam can sometimes have horrible framerate problems for a couple of hours and then return to normal.

This morning I tried starting Dead Center on L4D2 and the framerate was still superlow and unplayable.
I left the computer on while I was away at work.
I come home, start up L4D2 without restarting the computer, and voila, perfect framerate again. :D

I'm still gonna clear out a couple of things and do another virus scan just in case.
But the problem seemingly disappeared on it's own.

Oh and as to the "Maybe Norton has hidden scans going on in the background", I've seen them going on while I play Skyrim and they cause no framerate drops as far as I can tell.
So I wouldn't bet my money on that it's background programs or scans that does this, at least not Norton as it hasn't caused framerate drops before.
Like, an example, I had my computer on for 10 hours one day without restarting it, I had been surfing around on Opera a lot, I had Itunes up, I had VLC up and I still had Opera up as well as Norton probably doing something behind the scenes without any framerate problems at all really.
No idea what this problem was, what caused it, if it was my hardware or software or background programs or a Steam bug.
But last time it kinda disappeared on it's own and so it did this time and everything's back to normal.

I still don't like the idea of having this problem unanswered, being left in the dark yknow.
Not knowing what caused this and if I should do anything to prevent it from getting worse.
But for now, it works again, if these random severe framerate drops starts to become more frequent then I'll deal with it at that point.
As for right now, I'm off to play some L4D! :D
