[UI] Reply selection in a dialogue

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 12:29 am

Hello,

Very often, when the user selects a reply during a dialogue, be that either with the up/down keys and the activation key, or with the mouse (or combination of both), another reply is chosen. This really breaks the game flow, as more often than not an unwanted option is selected in a quest. At best, this is very frustrating because it forces the user to skip the unwanted dialogues and restart all over again.

Probably one of the most irritating bug, that should be quite easy to fix, is there anything planned yet?

Thanks.

Are you playing in the English language? Are you using any mods?

But personally I've found this happened to me even in 1.0 no mods, except more often I find the arrow keys just simply stop working and I need to select the response using the mouse. I haven't changed my keybindings at all.

Note I've been using "Interface Hard Coded Key Tweaks" as I find that fixes a lot of problems with using the keyboard: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=88

This is still an issue with 1.3. I find that just continuously mousing over options to make sure that I can see the right selection highlighted is a minor workaround. Problem is that sometimes the WHITE highlight stays stuck on the first selection, and then a slightly lighter shaded grey, than non-selected, is what is highlighted.

Ah yes, I do get this exact issue, as well in other places too. To date no mod has fixed it for me.

Yes, this happens to many players. It's really a combination of several problems, likely resulting from designing for gamepads with no planning for mouse usability:
  • The mouse clicks are not handled as one might expect (read cursor position on click, determine what's under the cursor). Instead, clicks activate whatever was selected regardless of where the cursor actually is. Yes, this means that clicking empty space will sometimes cause interaction where there should be none.
  • To deal with the stupidity of #1, the menu selection is hardcoded to follow the mouse cursor as it moves around. This sometimes stops working.
  • The slight increase in text brightness that indicates what you just selected by mousing over it is very subtle, so it can be hard to tell if the code for #2 is working or not.
There's been no word on a full fix, although some official patch earlier made this break completely less often. #2 still fails sometimes at least when reading books from the inventory. This whole thing is just plain inexcusable.

Yes, this still happens on 1.3.1.0, and no, it doesn't have anything to do with keybinding (hardcoded key tweaks). There has been no response from Bethesda, and I have mentioned this on the two UI mod discussions in the Mods section.

It wastes an enormous amount of time, it's extremely annoying, and it's just horrible UI design. Some people say the "don't have any problems" but everyone who has answered my question on *this* subject admits it happens to them.

Is it *NOT* happening for anyone?

What is strange is that I have never seen the same problem in other selection systems, in the inventory, skill, spell, ... menus. Nor have I in Lydia's conversations (or any other companion's).

I didn't see any bug report site... are there forums supposed to be the place? Are they browsed by a team who's forwarding the issues to the developers, or just a convenient way to get rid of those annoying customers? I hope it's the former ;)

*EDIT* Actually, there is this form: http://support.gamesas.com/eng/platformlist.asp, strange that they wouldn't use a bug report system. Even if filled in by gamma users, it would still help in filtering entries.

This forum is more like a collective self-help system. Maybe they read this occasionally, maybe they don't, but it's so much more pleasing to release your well-justified rage when you know others can see it.

If you contacted their customer support you'd probably get some generic "have you tried restarting your computer?" copypasta in return and you'd never know if anyone even saw the report.

It's been happening to me regardless of the game version. Not only is it annoying, but it also makes talking or trading virtually impossible. I don't believe Bethesda will ever fix it; I just stopped using the mouse altogether. I navigate the dialogue with keybord alone and there are no problems, I just need to make sure the cursor is somewhere on the side and not hovering over the text.
This game really wasn't designed for PCs...

Until Bethesda fixes problems like this, SkyUI has fixes included in it -- http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3863

All around great UI for us PC users.
