Issues with missing textures - please help me fix it?

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 7:14 am

So I recently upgraded my pc so it has 4 gigs of memory and I'm still running into this issue. This doesn't happen with the vanilla game, but I rather like my retextures I have at the moment and so I'd like a way to get them to stop. If means upgrading my pc even more, so be it. Another note, I usually alt-tab out, after pulling up the console through the ~ key. I talk to my friends when I play sometimes. If that's part of the problem I'll understand. However it still happens when I play it without alt-tabbing. And the time varies from when it happens. It usually happens with my trees (which I use vurt's flora mod), some armors I have had retextured, but sometimes the inside of buildings and even the npcs start losing them.

I play in windowed mode with it set to standard (4:3 or 5:4), with 1152x864 as my screen res, and textures are set to high, everything else is pretty much set to medium, with all the water features enabled, fxaa off since I'm not really sure how much it improves it. Anti alising and antisotropic are off. One last note, I've never seen it use much of my new four gigs while playing, it usally stays below 2 gigs. I had task manager up to check, with processes and performance.

I have my game patched to the 1.3 patch with that official laa exe. Although, I must ask, since I'm not too tech savy, does it even work with 32 bit, or was it meant more for 64 bit, since I only have 32 bit? I also know my ati card wasn't on the list of supported cards, so it may be time for a new one. I'll post my dxdiag down below, just in case it does have something to do with my laptop. I really do want this issue to stop. If people do read this, thank you for doing so. Although I'd really appreciate it if I can get help with this.

If you are running hi-res texture packs on a laptop that has 505mb of dedicated memory, I don't think it's ever going to work out well.

You are probably running out of VRAM. The card is pretty old and probably not meant for gaming anyway. Also you have 4 gigs of RAM, but a 32 bit operating system can
only utilise a max of 3GB.

Alright guess I'll have to upgrade the card then, er get a new one. :l And it only uses 3 gigs? Rather glad I didn't waste my time with 8 gigs then if that's the case since that's the max my laptop could get. And getting a new laptop isn't an option. Hopefully a new card then will be the fix for this, if its that simple.

Don t play windowed, play full screen (normal mode)
Windowed mode will tax your system like hell
Anisotropic shouldn t cause a problem, on the contrary, skyrim sort of depend on it to get good textures
This may be the reason you use a texture mod, try turning anisotropic on instead
antialiasing can be costly, depend on your specific card
avoid using task manager or any window switching if your system already got problems !!!
and make sure nothing else run, not even frapps
you can try reducing to low to see if things get better
on my computer, low surprisingly look good
(I usually play on ultra because you see further away)

In any case, get the basics running before you try any mods
otherwise it s like trying to get your brand new car to run on beer ...
I doubt it will work .... try regular gas first, then if it work, you can try playing the mad scientist

So I recently upgraded my pc so it has 4 gigs of memory and I'm still running into this issue. This doesn't happen with the vanilla game, but I rather like my retextures
[spoiler]
------------------
System Information
------------------
Operating System: Windows Vista? Business (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.111025-0338)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: HP ProBook 4710s
Processor: Intel? Core?2 Duo CPU P7370 @ 2.00GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
Memory: 3036MB RAM
---------------
Card name: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

For starter you got a radeon hd 4300, this isn t exactly high end, and much weaker than my configuration

Myself I tend to push to Ultra settings, because it look so amazing
But my radeon hd 6800 serie got trouble keeping up with that
So I m not surprised when I get texture glitches

I have confirmed, repeateadly, that lowering myself to high fix all the problems forever
I never experienced a single glitch on high settings
But eventually, after a couple hours (3+) of play on ultra, glitches eventually creep in
(high is the recommended setting for me)

So, take a long look at those mods, try to compare to the original textures, if the mod has bigger textures .... bad idea !!!
Instead, try to see if you can improve anisotropic filtering, it does a netter job than most texture mods
there are also post processing mods that are lighteight, not that demanding
that may achieve the effects you want at less cost (for example, changing the shaders, this has no cost whatsoever)

textures mods are usually bad, unless you got a top notch machine,
because too often untutored moders assume that bigger is better
well, just have a look at poser or any modern rendering software,
and you learn textures are surprisingly not always critical

Also, patch 1.3.10 seems to have improved the graphics mysteriously, for me at least,
and it was a hughe difference - maybe for some reason the engine was not using the right textures before
everything look crispier now, more detailled, and the shaders effects are more visible, especially in the ratway in riften
(well, that s where I was at the time, so that s what I noticed)

No it's not that simple. A laptop is not like a desktop, you can't just push a new card in there. They are specialist and soldered in tight. I doubt you could even upgrade it at all if you are not some sort of laptop engineering god.

Sooo you have 3 options, buy a new laptop, (which you say is out) buy a new desktop, (which is probably also out) or turn off your texture packs....

Aside from vurt's flora, the only retextures I have are there to change the colors of some armor, and clothes.I have a shader mod but its to get rid of the game's default desaturated look, and too make the night's darker. I have kept away from most of those high res packs, because I don't need them, let alone adding them only makes it worse, the missing textures, not so much lag or anything. Game runs pretty smoothly for the most part. I keep my settings on mostly medium with only my textures set to high. I wonder if setting them to medium would help for the time being.

I just asked my mom and she said I could, and she went to online school for computer's and such, before I saw this post. But, because I'm not all that educated in these matters, I'm unsure now. My laptop needs to sent in anyhow for a new headphone jack, so if they can get a new card in great, if not then it won't come as a surprise now. Although this pretty much does limit my playtime with the game. I namely got this for the mods when I was done the main game stuff, and it'll be really disappointing in the long run without them.
