Disappointment...

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 7:43 am

When I first made a mage I knew I would be heading straight for the Mages collage. I'v seen their library before, and figured as a member I would get access to all their books. Wasn't the case. So I completely the story line, witch seemed to push you through very fast... And... still didn't have access, so I got suspicious of why I was not allowed to open these book cases with what looked like hundreds of books in them.. so I pick pocketed Urog Gro-Shab (or something like that) and he didn't have the damn key! So I walked up to the book shelf... looked through the glass... and to my horror.. the books... were a lie! There aren't even books in there. It's just flat texture made too look like books :cryvaultboy:

I'm a sad mage... There are still maybe 30 books laying around but... sigh, I was so worked up to look through those :flame:

The entire collage is disappointing really. I figured I would have endless resources for stuff but.. no few things here and there, 3 parts of a building, 2 of witch are living quarters and the third is a hall, a Library and the Arch-mages quarters...

This is where tessellation would do wonders. It wouldn't give you books but it would make the lie more believable.

OT: One of my favorite things to do is collect all the rare books in the world.

The mages college was thoroughly unimpressive to me too. It really only has 1 floor, which is the library. Everywhere else you can go is just dorm rooms. There's literally nothing there.

Wouldn't that make sense though since Skyrim is primarily inhabited by the Nord who value honor, and battle. or did I get that wrong?

It would make sense that there aren't mages guilds everywhere, yes. But the one place in Skyrim that does have a collection of mage scholars turns out to be one empty room with a small library above it, and some bunkbeds?

I'm sorry, but for all the hype, and even for how big and impressive the building is, it's just a completely empty let-down.

What hype? Unless you ask about magic you wouldn't even know about the college, at least that was the case for me. I wasn't expecting much, because of the lore, and the fact that even the major cities have like one mage, that being the court mage.

Well, people do experiment in their own dorm rooms, but yes, it's empty

If you think the mages guild is disappointing, just wait until you see the bards college ...

Why are people expecting so much out of a college located in one of the most desolate regions of Skyrim, a land where respect for magic and intellectualism in general is largely non-existent?

There are some books in there. Two or maybe three of the shelves are unlocked.

Yes. Seems to me like bethesda skimmed on anything to do with guilds and buffed non-guild stuff.
Idiot guild quests? Check. Sparse guild quarters? Check.

Meanwhile i could find many dungeons that are probably more interesting than the guild questline alone.

You learn about that in the questline. (And, like everything to do with the College, it's potentially interesting at first but ultimately underwhelming.)

Wasn't really what i meant... i have done the whole questline, there are two things in the Midden that are.... peculiar. Without going into too much detail ofc.

YEPS.

I can think of several single dungeons that are more fascinating than entire guilds. They did a fairly good job with level design this time around, but I think they really messed up on the social environments. Taverns, guild halls, castles. They all seem fairly sparse.

Ah, I see what you meant. If you look around the Midden, you'll find some 'relevant' literature.

Ok, thanks... i thought may be some opening for DLC... like the Orrery in OB. Like it was always there, but only the DLC unlocked it :P

Actually I'm glad someone mentioned the midden. Is there more to... that, then I thought? I mean, I never did get a quest or anything about the eh... strange stuff down there. Is there more to it or is it just there to be ... strange?

I haven't got a quest for it either... i'm thinking (dissapointingly) they will be related to DLC :( Unless someone else can give us a...hand here.

This is all I've discovered so far (not much but maybe it will help):

Spoiler
The Daedric hand has a mini quest involved with it, just follow the clues in the book found nearby and grab the key.

The Atronach Forge, I haven't really investigated, but I remember reading a book about it in Morrowind or Oblivion. It explained how to make it. Looks like someone actually did it. I found an Atronach Forge Recipe in a chest in a dungeon somewhere but for the life of me I can't recall where. It was just random loot (I think).
