Forced anisotropic filter on water ... and shimmering on wat

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 3:18 am

I just tried to force AF through NVIDIA Inspector. It works fine and it does what it is supposed to do - gives AF on everything, including water that vanilla AF doesn't effect.

However, now that I have AF on water it shimmers like crazy. If you move and look at the water reflections/waves, you'll notice the shimmering.
I tried to set iWaterMultiSamples=4 but it doesn't do the slightest difference.

I like AF on water but I don't like the huge shimmering it causes. Is there any way to get the plus side (AF on water) here without the negative side (shimmering on water)?

this could turn into an interesting thread....

Are you using any Water MOD?
In inspector make sure....."Antialising Transparency Multisampling" is Disabled.

I am ....and it looks so real I cant believe it. I have 16 AF going on a 560ti and the only thing i still have is...certain dogs have no insides...hahahh I can see thru them ...yes multi whatever is turned off in inspector .

I use Realistic water textures.....RWT_med haven't noticed any shimmer..But will go in game and take a few shots....

Have you forced AF through the nvidia control panel instead of the inspector application?

I use vanilla water. The shimmering only shows when you're moving. I notice it the most when moving slowly sidewards when looking at a large body of water. It kind of looks like as if there's no anti-aliasing at all on the water and all reflections just shimmer a lot.

I got zero MSAA - I got FXAA. I tried to increase MSAA to 8x though to see if the shimmering went away. It didn't. I also tried to increase SSAA through Injector but that didn't help and it just crippled my FPS.

I originally tried to use AF forced through inspector, but when I got the shimmering I disabled it and atm I use vanilla 16x AF instead.
As far as I know the Inspector works just as the NVIDIA control panel, just that it got a few more options.

These are also my relevant ini settings:

iWaterReflectHeight=512
iWaterReflectWidth=512
bUseWaterDisplacements=1
bUseWaterRefractions=1
bUseWaterReflections=1
bUseWaterDepth=1

That is what I'm using at the moment. The control panel is 16 for AF and high quality textures. This looks much better than in-game settings but it does add a bit of gloss to everything. I notice it most on enchanted guild armor.

Edit: I did have FXAA enabled and noticed it was creating a faint yellow halo sometimes. Turning it off seemed to fix this issue.

hmmm...usually, that shimmering is a result of having SSAO enabled, usually in 'performance' mode (for nvidia). There is alot less shimmer in high quality...so do you have SSAO applied also?

No SSAO. Nothing shimmers except for the water reflections.

I could try and upload a video if I have time (extremely much studies atm). Just hope the quality is good enough (I got free version of Bandicam).

When i got the water mod it suggested changing these 2 lines to 1024

iWaterReflectHeight=512
iWaterReflectWidth=512

It looks better , it makes the reflections clearer.

Try changing those two lines to 1024 see if it gets better ..if not Try the water mod...you will love it.

I tried 1024 resolution. The reflections are less blocky now, but at a cost of 0-3 FPS depending on situation. Worth it though.
But... it doesn't affect the shimmering problem at all.
I'll try uploading a video.

I noticed another bug when I fiddled with ini. When bReflectSky=1 in Skyrim.ini, the far sky reflections "pulse" as you run.
Could someone confirm this?

Would appreciate if someone did the following and reported back in this thread:
1) Make sure bReflectSky=1 is in Skyrim.ini.
2) Go to the northern coast, moderately far out in the ocean
3) Type "tcl" in console and make sure you're above the water quite a bit.
4) Run and sprint, look at the water reflections in the distance. When you're running they should "pulse" less. When you're sprinting they should "pulse" more.

Just did that....think this is what your seeing and probably why its off by default.

Its the head bob while walking / running.

Try this.....Go really really high up...so you have a good view of the sky in the water..as you move you can see the reflection boob with your head movement.

Wow, that's very high up :tongue:
I found the pulsing more noticable lower down.
I have a comparison image here of bReflectSky=1:

1) Here I'm standing still. No pulsing since I'm not moving. http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/5628/tesv20120101200139673.jpg
2) Here I'm moving. Notice the difference in sky water reflections. They're "pulsing" to look like that depending on how fast you run. http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4434/tesv20120101200141067.jpg

This is non-relevant to the AF shimmering bug, but another bug. Just wanted to confirm I wasn't the only one having this bReflectSky=1 bug.
If more people can confirm they also have this issue, then yeah... that's probably why bReflectSky=1 is off by default.

and ..

As i lowered myself I could see that reflection flatten, and turn into the Pulse. Try it. I wouldn't really call this a bug.
