game will no longer launch

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 6:05 am

bought the game yesterday, downloaded, installed. no issues with any of that, howeever today after getting home from work, game wont launch from steam. it goes through the "preparing to launch skyrim" steam window, then the skyrim launcher shows up and then things break.

windows has this to say about the experiance.

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: SkyrimLauncher.exe Application Version: 1.2.14.0 Application Timestamp: 4eb1a8ce Fault Module Name: SkyrimLauncher.exe Fault Module Version: 1.2.14.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 4eb1a8ce Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 0000f398 OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 0a9e Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789 Additional Information 3: 0a9e Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

system specs are as follows.
mb: asus m5a97 970 am3+
cpu: amd ph II 1100t 3,3gh am3
mem: 4gx2 pny
hd: 500gb
vga: xfx hd6870 (pc: 687a-znfc) 2 cards in crossfire
os: win7 64 bit

when it ran after installing it ran perfect no crashes no desktop to glitches no hangs, sheer perfection (ran on max settings @ approx 30-45 fps). if you have any leads on whats going on here. Or perhaps would like to point out how i missed someone elses post with this exact same problem (i promise i used the search bar). please respond below.

Thank you,

In your steam settings, disable Steam Community.

There are some common conflicts with third party software which are causing game not launching when hitting play issues, but from your description it sounds like the launcher is crashing before you even get to hit 'play', is that right?

If so, verify steam cache files as per the instructions in one of the stickies and see if that helps.

already did should have included that in my post i appologize, i verified twice, it checked out both times. so far no one has instructed me to do anything like restart, but i figure that can be assumed as having been done. im also fairly certain i have disabled steam community... yes in fact i have. so that rules out the first two solutions. to clarify the launcher with the snowy backround shows up but alsmost as soon as it does everything breaks and windows gives me the above info(see first post). if anyone has any other idea please let me know.

Thank you,

You could also update the display driver to version 11.12 or 12.1 (preview). I use the 12.1 version.

And another test. Move the Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files from the My Games\Skyrim folder to somewhere else. And by moving I mean there should be no such files left in that folder. Start the SkyrimLauncher and the program should make new files for you.

yes i have re-installed directx as well as skyrim itself. reverified after doing that everything checked out. im starting to think this game is just a steaming pile. i will try the .ini trick and report back on how that turns out. as far as my display driver, i have a hard time beileving that is the problem because keep in mind i was able to play for 8 hours with litterally no problems after installing. then once i tried to launch the second time.... nothing... no dice. if it was my display drivers it just would not have worked period. but for the sake of eliminating that as a possiblity i will give that a go as well.

edit: .ini trick did not work, changing the display drivers also changed nothing... back to square one.

Something worth trying. Create a new windows profile, and ensure no program's are running when logged in as new user, except from your AV and steam. See if the game runs then

What's the model of your motherboard mate?

It's mad how our systems are so similar, and yet I've not had a single crash. Just goes to show.

Another thing, have you tried disabling crossfire?

the new profile trick did nothing same error. i'll try disabling crossfire, but that renders my dual card setup pointless... and that would make me sad. the model number of my board is in the first post, its a m5a97 evo.

Do you know if you have Gamer OSD installed on your system?

I was reluctant to lend a hand since the OP seems like they would almost be happier returning the game, but here goes:
  • Update your drivers to the latest version - you're using multiple cards with a new game. This should be the first thing you try.
  • Are you using any mods? It seems like you were able to play the game the first day, yet on day two it wouldn't start. If you installed any mods, uninstall them.
  • Delete your Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files from \Documents\MyGames\Skyrim and let the launcher recreate them.
This game isn't a 'steaming pile.' It works for just about everyone - even those that want to use mods or ini tweaks that push the envelope - provided they want to expend the effort to learn how to do it correctly. There have been dual-graphics card-related issues reported for Skyrim, but as I do not own an ATI card and do not have two video cards (since these issues are very common for new games), you may have to resort to using the search feature to research whether or not that is relevant to your configuration.

god your an ass kastagir. you did everything but actually come out and call me and idiot. had you read any of this thread you would have seen that i have done both of the relavent things you mentioned. there were no mods installed making that part irrelevant. Further more if there had been mods installed i had completly uninstalled and re-installed the game... as far as i am concerned any game that has this many pages of people having problems after getting the thing installed, is a "steaming pile". Now keep in mind that doesn't mean it isn't fun to play. its just that this thing seems to not run unless you dance on one leg while hovering in mid air and praying to the flying spaghetti monster. and as far as returning the game goes i would but i had the bright idea to buy it through steam, and i would rather gouge my eyes out with a dull spoon than go through their return process. so that being said disabling crossfire had the effect of the steam window saying "preparing to launch skyrim" poping up then sitting there indefinatly. in fact i still have that window up just to see if i leave it long enough if something will happen. if anyone else has any ideas i'm all ears.

At this time, I only have these 2 things left lol.

Disable Crossfire.

Uninstall your amd driver. Before restarting, use driver sweeper to completely remove all amd display driver files. Then restart, and install the 12.1 driver.

Other than that, I have no more ammo ;)

Have you tried calling technical support? Or is that too much trouble?

ok update on the fix to this problem. while im not sure which one actually fixed it. i did two things, i completly eradicated all remnates of skyrim from my computer, i also un-installed and cleaned my video drivers. i have amd produced radeon hd cards in my build, if this describes you then you may also want to use the 11.2 catalyst control center as that is what is working for me. i still believe this game is a pile but it is a damned fun pile and is worth it IF you can get the thing running.

P.S. B1gBadDaddy is pretty much the only reason this is working for me. many thanks go out to him/her.
