Places with interesting, unique loot

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 1:29 pm

After having played Skyrim for some time now, I start to get a pretty good picture of what I like about it and what not.

Dungeons, imo, are much improved over Oblivion, they look very nice, and most of them have some small story behind them (although the game could use more non-linear ones).

What somehow bugs me though, is that I rarely find something truly memorable/worthwhile there.
Usually there is some boss enemy and a randomized chest at the end (which, if you are out of luck will contain nothing of value).
I wondered, given that obviously a lot of work went into the dungeons, are there some which contain some unique, non-leveled items?
Eventually raiding dungeons loses some appeal if all you get are some coins and a few potions from a randomized chest...

So post here if you found something!

As I understand through many hours of gameplay and reading this forum, there arnt any. Everything is level scaled and anything that "exists" at any level is quest related. Sad, I know

I've found consistently better loot from raiding giant camps than from dungeons.

Ehm, no. I know of at least two places with unique loot. One has a shard of mehrunes razor and more, one has a unique staff. And I haven't even cleared a lot of dungeons. Hell, if you count a unique spell and loads of mammoth tusks as unique loot, then the game is filled with static unique loot.

If you compare randomly raiding dungeons to raiding giant camps you will find better things from the giants than that one good chest you get in a dungeon. Plus the time it takes to do a camp us about 10 seconds. You can't beat that. And yes there are unique items but they are lackluster and you can craft better.

Unique Items without a Quest stashed in Trunks in Dungeons ? No. Some that have unique names but are random in appearance and in what they do. Yes.
But I dont see a problem there, since there are plenty of Quests with unique loot that involve Dungeons.
Where I do see a problem though, is that there are no fixed classes so most of the unique Quest Rewards are useless to you.
What you should know is, that if you enter a Dungeon without a Quest for it, the Dungeon will often be incomplete, so that may be the reason why you find nothing unique.

Not necessarily all dungeons, but some do as you're wandering through. Chillrend, per exemple.

Well most of the 16 unique daedric artifacts (some of which additional unique alternatives if you chose different solutions to those quests) come from quests you get from exploring and finding either special items or shrines. There are some cool levelled artifacts such as Chillrend which do not require quests to find. They are levelled, but generally quite good at the level you find them unless you persue enchanting and smitthing faster than all your other skills. These include:

Chillrend
The Pale Blade
Gauldur Blackblade
Gauldur Blackbow

Some start quests or are associated with the Gauldur Amulet quest - which is just you read a book and get a quest to obtain the artifact for yourself.

Well here are some of the non-levelled unique items out there. Sure, many are either quest rewards or only obtainable during certain quests. Some have quests associated with them - ie you can get a personal quest to find the item from reading/hearing about it - which are not nescessary to obtain them. Many others can simply be found exploring. Some of these have unique effeects on them that you will not find on other items (or only 1-2 others) and some of these can even be disenchanted to learn those special effects; so even if you don't want the item itself you may want to use the effect. This list is not complete but comes from skimming through the search results from the PC version dev console:

Weapons:
Alessandra’s Dagger
Amren’s Family Sword
Steel Battleaxe of Fiery Souls (is apparently non generic)
Aegisbane
Bolar's Oathblade
Bow of the Hunt
Eduj
Firiniel's End
Froki's Bow
Grimsever
Notched Pickaxe (Minecraft reference)
Okin
Red Eagle's Fury and Red Eagle's Bane
Trollsbane
Woodsman's Axe
Wuuthrad

Armor:
Jester's Garb
Helm of Yngol
Konahrik
The Forgemaster's Fingers
Gloves of the Pugilist
Movarth's Boots
Predator's Grace
Shield of Ysgramor

Clothing/Jewelry
Charmed Necklace
Nightweaver's Band
Muiri's Ring
The Gauldur Amulet
Necromancer Amulet

Dragonpriest Masks (most are aquired merely by dungeon diving and boss-killing on your own):
Krosis
Morokei
Hevnoraak
Nahkriin
Otar
Rahgot
Konahkrik
Vokun
Wooden Mask

Staves:
Eye of Melka
Hevnoraak's Staff
Sild's Staff
Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson
Staff of Tandil
Staff of Magnus

Some of these are quest rewards. The Dragon Priest masks are not though a few (3) are found during quests. Some of these (such as the Red Eagle items) have a quest to find them for the sake of finding them - you read a book and this provides information about it and marks it on your map; Grimsever similarly can be lead to by a quest. The quests are not nescessary to discover the items though.

Can't remember where I found it, might have been someones house I done a quest for then robbed them blind legally, and it's probally not unique in sense theres only one of them, but I did find an equippable, usable dinner knife, probally one of the most unique things I found which amused me.
Not a dungeon but unique loot as far as I can tell, you can get the Mead with juniper berries Ralof mentions in the intro, sadly the effects aren't unique and Ralof doesn't seem to react to it at all.

Oh and one other thing to keep in mind - non-leveled unique items in dungeons will generally not be inside chests. In some cases they'll be on the non-leveled boss ( like Sild the Warlock or the named dragon priests) but in most other cases they will be on a pedestal, on a table, or otherwise placed in the open in a place that draws attention to it.

^ Indeed. I'm not much for dungeon crawling, but there's something VERY nice in Bloated Man's Grotto.

I got it from Mercer's display case, I was so happy. Then I realized I was playing an Archery-based Thief.

Yeah you get much nicer archery thief stuff later. Probably one of the best bows in the game you don't have to make yourself.

I don't know how many of you have played Nehrim, but it had this nice thing regarding loot in dungeons.

In many dungeons you could find some unique loot at the end, often a piece of some set.
This gave you a good motivation to explore (outside sightseeing), as you could be sure to find something interesting (even if it did not always fit your character, but that's part of the whole thing).

Now, granted, it's not like there is zero reason to explore in Skyrim, you have shouts, and sometimes there are nice things at the end, but I cannot help but feel that it would enhance the experience a bit more...

Found something interesting!

"Red Eagle's Sword", which is a one-handed sword tied to a small quest with some beackstory.

You find it in
Spoiler
some Forsworn camp near Markath, called Red Eagles Redoubt, I think. Reading a book nearby will start a short quest which will upgrade the sword.

Not sure if it is leveled, though, but it was a nice surprise when I found it.

I found an enchanted warhammer called "Trollsbane" which does extra damage against trolls, looks like an iron warhammer though. It was on a body at an unmarked location with 2 trolls fighting each other.

I also got the poachers axe which is a woodcutter's axe that does extra damage against animals, again it looks just like a regular woodcutters axe.

Reason I think these are unique items is because of the enchantments, I haven't seen them on any other enchanted items and the poacher's axe is always in the same place (haven't found Trollsbane again because I forget where I got it the first time)

You've forgoten the "Longhammer" an unenchanted unique mace..... I wish there were items like this for all weapon categories =/

Fortunatly Skyforged weapons look great, and have decent damage.

Is there a difference in skyforged steel weapons and ordinary steel weapons?

Damage wise? YES!

It's weaker than Ebony/Daedric, but on the same level as Elven weapons. But if you're a blacksmith, the difference is not that big... Melee damage has never been a problem for me.
